The city&#8217;s homicide rate has fallen sharply since the early 1990s, when Colombia as a whole was dealing with cartel violence at a scale that justified extreme caution. That era is more than three decades gone. Colombia&#8217;s national homicide rate hit its lowest point since 1974 back in 2016, and Bogot\u00e1&#8217;s own rate has continued to trend downward since. It does mean the gap between &#8220;Colombia&#8217;s national security situation&#8221; and &#8220;walking around Zona T on a Tuesday afternoon&#8221; is much wider than most people assume before they arrive.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tBarrios Seguros para Viajeros\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>Casi todos los visitantes de Bogot\u00e1 terminan en el mismo pu\u00f1ado de zonas, y por buenas razones: ah\u00ed est\u00e1n los hoteles, los restaurantes y las atracciones, y tambi\u00e9n son las \u00e1reas con mayor presencia policial de la ciudad.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tUsaqu\u00e9n\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>Queda en el norte y es una de las zonas m\u00e1s tranquilas y residenciales que un viajero puede elegir. During the day, with crowds of visitors and a visible police presence, it feels exactly like the postcard suggests.\u00a0After dark, La Candelaria empties out fast, and that&#8217;s precisely when caution matters most &#8211; plan daytime visits, and take a private driver or rideshare back instead of walking out after the sun goes down.<\/p>\n\t<p>Two more worth knowing, especially for longer stays:\u00a0Zona G\u00a0(&#8220;Zona Gourmet&#8221;) is a small, walkable restaurant district within Chapinero, popular for dinner, not nightlife, and it&#8217;s about as low-key and secure as Bogot\u00e1 gets.\u00a0Teusaquillo, west of Chapinero, is a quieter, largely residential area popular with students and academics thanks to its proximity to several universities &#8211; less touristy, but consistently described as calm and safe.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0Monserrate\u00a0specifically: the mountain sits right above the city and is reached by a funicular railway or a cable car, both of which run during set daytime hours and are well used and well supervised.
