Jos&eacute; Mar&iacute;a C&oacute;rdova (IATA: MDE, ICAO: SKRG) sits on the high plateau of Rionegro, east of the city, at 2,142 metres &mdash; about 660 metres above the valley floor, which is why the terminal feels cooler than El Poblado. Getting down into the city takes 45 to 60 minutes by road through the T&uacute;nel de Oriente, and that ride is the one decision most travellers get wrong.<\/p>\n<p>It is Colombia&rsquo;s second-busiest airport: more than 14 million passengers in 2025, in a terminal designed for 11 million, with 14 airlines, direct flights to 13 Colombian cities and roughly 22 international routes. This guide covers the whole airport: the terminal and the 2026 works that are reshaping it, what happens between touchdown and the curb, every way into the city with the official 2026 fares, lounges, hotels, parking, departing, and the one question that trips people up &mdash; which of Medell&iacute;n&rsquo;s two airports you are actually flying into. It moved 1.27 million passengers in 2024, about a tenth of MDE&rsquo;s traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The difference on the ground is large. From EOH you are a short ride from El Poblado and Laureles. From MDE you are on a plateau on the other side of a mountain, an hour from the same hotel. If you are connecting from an international flight to a regional one, check the airport code on the second ticket before you book: a same-day MDE-to-EOH connection means a taxi or transfer across the city, not a walk to another gate. The two airports share an operator, Airplan, but nothing else.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mde-terminal\">The terminal, floor by floor<\/h2>\n<p>Jos&eacute; Mar&iacute;a C&oacute;rdova is one building on two levels. <strong>Level 1 is arrivals<\/strong>: international passengers come through immigration, baggage and customs into the public hall; domestic passengers collect bags and walk straight out. The airline offices are on this floor too. <strong>Level 2 is departures<\/strong>: two check-in halls, A and B, the airline sales points, the security filters and the boarding piers, domestic on one side and international on the other. International departures pass through immigration, where Migraci&oacute;n Colombia runs Biomig automated gates alongside staffed booths.<\/p>\n<p>The terminal was built for 11 million passengers a year and has carried more than that since 2022, so it is often full. In April 2026 Airplan began an optimisation programme inside the existing building, with the airport staying open throughout. What it adds, by the operator&rsquo;s own account: a new domestic boarding room with 750 seats and six bus gates; check-in capacity in Hall A rising from 28 to 36 positions and in Hall B from 28 to 44, with self-service kiosks going from 7 to 14 and 7 to 18; two more domestic security lanes (six to eight); more Biomig gates in international departures (10 to 13) and arrivals (7 to 10); a rebuilt international connections centre; and a bigger baggage-screening system. Practically, that means hoardings, moved counters and the occasional rerouted queue while the works run. Avianca, LATAM, United and Air Europa have sales points in the main hall on the second floor; Aerom&eacute;xico, American, JetBlue and Wingo keep offices on the first floor. Domestic flights go direct to 13 cities &mdash; Bogot&aacute;, Cartagena, Cali, Barranquilla, Santa Marta, Bucaramanga, Pereira, Armenia, C&uacute;cuta, Monter&iacute;a, Pasto, Riohacha and San Andr&eacute;s &mdash; and the airport manager counted 12 domestic and 22 international routes at the start of 2026, with the United States, Panama, Mexico, Spain and the Caribbean the main international markets.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mde-arrivals\">From landing to the curb<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"stc-mde-fig stc-mde-portrait\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/safetransferscolombia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/el-dorado-arrivals-concourse.avif\" alt=\"Traveler walking through the busy arrivals concourse at El Dorado Airport, Bogota\" width=\"1067\" height=\"1600\"><figcaption>The arrivals concourse at El Dorado in Bogot&aacute;. Photos of the Medell&iacute;n terminal are on their way.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Before you land: Check-Mig<\/h3>\n<p>Colombia asks every traveller entering or leaving the country to complete the free Check-Mig form on Migraci&oacute;n Colombia&rsquo;s website, between 72 hours and one hour before the trip. Do it on the plane if you have not already; it saves a conversation at the booth.<\/p>\n<h3>Immigration: what the queue is really like<\/h3>\n<p>Colombian citizens and enrolled travellers use the Biomig automated gates. Foreign visitors go to a staffed booth on arrival, and this is where MDE earns its reputation: when two or three international flights land together, travellers report waits of an hour and three quarters to three hours, while arrivals after about 8 p.m. often clear in five to twenty-five minutes. The airport is adding three Biomig gates to arrivals (seven to ten) in the 2026 works, which should take the edge off. Two things worth knowing at the booths: travellers aged 60 and over have a priority line, the one along the left-hand wall, and Canadian passport holders are sent to a separate desk because of the reciprocity fee, which is sometimes the shorter line and sometimes the longer one. Most nationalities get 90 days on arrival for tourism; check your own entry rules before you fly. On departure, Migraci&oacute;n Colombia lets foreigners use Biomig without prior enrolment, except when travelling with children.<\/p>\n<h3>Baggage, customs, and the doors<\/h3>\n<p>Baggage claim is on the arrivals level. After customs you step into the public arrivals hall, which is where drivers, families and tour operators wait. If you have booked a private transfer, your driver is inside this hall with your name on a sign &mdash; international arrivals if you flew in from abroad, domestic arrivals if you flew in from Bogot&aacute; or the coast &mdash; so do not walk out to the curb looking for him. If you are taking the bus, turn to Door 2. If you are heading to Rionegro itself, the town&rsquo;s taxis wait at Door 3.<\/p>\n<h3>Connections<\/h3>\n<p>Avianca and LATAM both run sizeable domestic operations from MDE, so international-to-domestic connections are common. The <strong>T&uacute;nel de Oriente<\/strong>, opened in 2019, is 8.2 km long and cut the airport-to-centre trip to about 45 minutes from an hour and a half on the old mountain roads; it carries a toll ($26.300 COP for cars in 2026) and it is the way almost every taxi, bus and private transfer goes. Airport to Parque Lleras is 22 km by that road: 35 minutes when it is clear, 45 to 60 in normal traffic, and more in the peaks. The <strong>Las Palmas<\/strong> road climbs over the top instead: slower, tolled as well, and the route you want when the tunnel backs up &mdash; or when it is shut, which it is on maintenance nights, typically from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. for a few consecutive nights, with Las Palmas signed as the alternative. The terminal is open 24 hours, the Combuses bus and the taxi queue run all night, and the public hall on the arrivals level never fully empties. Landside, expect hard seats, a few 24-hour food counters and a temperature that drops noticeably after midnight at this altitude &mdash; keep a layer out. Currency counters sit in international arrivals (Globo Cambio, Global Exchange) and in the main hall (Sudivisa), some of them round the clock; the rate is airport rate, so change enough for the first day and do the rest in the city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIM cards.<\/strong> Claro, Movistar and Tigo prepaid SIMs are sold in the terminal, mostly in the departures hall on the second floor, with at least one 24-hour electronics counter; expect to pay from roughly $30.000 COP for a tourist plan with around 10 GB, and to show your passport.
