Two of Colombia’s most storied places sit an hour apart, north of Bogota, and they belong in the same day. First you go underground: 180 meters down into the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, a working Catholic church carved inside a salt mine, where tunnels of rough-hewn crosses open into a vast nave lit in shifting color. Then you go up and out, to the crater lake of Guatavita at 3,100 meters, where a Muisca ruler once rowed out covered in gold dust and gave the world the legend of El Dorado.<\/p>\n

This guided day handles all of it: hotel pickup in Bogota, both entrances, the driving between sites, lunch on the private options, and a guide who tells the real history in both places, not the postcard version.
