The Salt Cathedral and Lake Guatavita in one day, on a shared departure. You travel with a small group rather than alone, which brings the cost down and puts you with other travellers for the day. Same two sites, same guide quality, different way of getting there.

How the day works

  • Hotel pickup in Bogotá, joining the day’s group.
  • North to Zipaquirá and down into the Salt Cathedral, carved out of a working salt mine 180 metres underground.
  • On to Lake Guatavita, the crater lake behind the El Dorado legend, sitting at around 3,100 metres.
  • Return to Bogotá. Expect eight to ten hours door to door.

  • Guatavita entry depends on the option you select. Read the calendar options before you book.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the difference from the private version?

Group size and flexibility. On a shared departure you travel with other guests on a set schedule, which costs less. The private version runs on your timing, with only your party in the vehicle.

How many people will be on it?

A small group. It needs at least two to run, and if the minimum is not met you can move the date or take a full refund.

Is Guatavita entry included or not?

It depends on the option you choose in the calendar. Some include it and some do not, so check the option before paying.

Is the Salt Cathedral claustrophobic?

Less than people expect. The chambers are large and well lit, and the main nave is enormous. It is a mine, though, and it is 180 metres down.

How much walking is there?

Moderate at both sites, on paths and steps. Nothing technical, but it is a long day at altitude.

Other ways to do this day

Want it on your own schedule? Take the private Salt Cathedral and Guatavita tour. Prefer just the lake? Lake Guatavita on its own is a gentler day. Or book the vehicle alone with a private transfer to Zipaquirá and Guatavita.
