Your Drive

Your transfer from Medellín to Guatapé takes around 2 hours 15 minutes, covering roughly 79 km east of the city. Your driver picks you up door-to-door — hotel, apartment, or the airport — and you head out of the Aburrá Valley on a paved mountain highway.

The first stretch climbs out of Medellín toward the eastern highlands. Expect curves, cooler air, and green hills opening up as the city falls behind. The road is fully paved and well-traveled, though the mountain bends mean a steady pace rather than a fast one.

You'll pass through the towns of Marinilla and El Peñol before the landscape turns to water — the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir spreads out in fingers of deep blue, dotted with islands. The Piedra del Peñol, a 220-metre monolith, rises ahead and is hard to miss.

Your driver can pause at the Piedra so you can take it in or climb the 740 steps to the top — just ask, or arrange it when you book. From there it's a short final leg into Guatapé itself.
Air-conditioned vehicle throughout, with luggage assistance at both ends.

About Guatapé

Guatapé is a lakeside town famous for its hand-painted zócalos — the colorful relief panels that line every street — and for the towering Piedra del Peñol just outside it. Climb the rock for a sweeping view over the reservoir, then wander the brightest streets in Colombia. It's an easy day trip from Medellín, and one of the most photographed places in the country.
