Thirty kilometres southwest of Bogotá the plateau drops away and the cloud forest begins. Chicaque is 300 hectares of it: oaks hung with moss, hummingbirds working the understorey, and a temperature around 18°C that stays damp all day. This is a full day in that forest with a birding guide, roughly three hours of it on foot.
How the day works
- An early start, because the forest is most active in the first hours of light.
- Your driver collects you from your hotel in Bogotá for the drive southwest.
- You walk the park’s forest trails with an expert birding guide, around three hours of it, at a pace set by what you find rather than by a clock.
- Time to eat and rest inside the park. Lunch is not included, so bring it or buy it there.
- Your driver returns you to Bogotá. Expect eight to ten hours door to door.

Good to know
- This is a full-day walking tour. Wear waterproof hiking footwear and clothes you can move in.
- Avoid bright colours. They make birds harder to approach.
- Bring a warm jacket. The park sits around 18°C and the cloud forest stays cool and wet through the day.
- Rain gear is sensible here even when Bogotá is dry. That is what makes it a cloud forest.
- About three hours of hiking on forest trails, with descent and climb.

Preguntas frecuentes
How hard is the walking?
Moderate. Roughly three hours on forest trails, and because the park sits on a slope you descend on the way in and climb on the way out. Take the climb slowly and it is manageable for most people.
Do I need to be a birder to enjoy it?
No. Chicaque is a beautiful piece of cloud forest whether or not you can name what is in it, and the guide adjusts to your level.
What about lunch?
Not included. There is food available inside the park, or you can bring your own. Tell your guide which you plan to do.
Will it rain?
Often, at least briefly. Cloud forest is defined by the moisture. Bring a waterproof layer and it stops being a problem.
Is the guide bilingual?
Yes, English and Spanish, and specialised in birds rather than general guiding.
More green days out of Bogotá
For a shorter version closer to the city, birdwatching on Monserrate takes four hours on a restricted summit trail. Higher and more open, the Chingaza páramo hike trades forest for frailejones. If you only need the vehicle and driver, see our full-day chauffeur.
