Bogotá has 188 recorded bird species, which is more than most countries manage. The Sendero Paramuno on Monserrate is the trail birders come for, and it is not open to general visitors. This is four hours at 3,152 metres with an expert birding guide, starting before most of the city is awake.
How the day works
- An early start. Your guide confirms the pickup time the day before, because birds keep their own schedule and dawn is the whole point.
- Your driver collects you from your hotel in Bogotá.
- You ascend to the Monserrate summit by cable car or funicular.
- You walk the Sendero Paramuno, the restricted birding trail, with a guide who knows the calls before the bird appears.
- Your driver returns you to your hotel. Four hours in total, and you are back well before lunch.

Good to know
- This tour starts early. Birds are most active at dawn and through the first hours of light.
- The trail sits at 3,152 metres. Take it slowly and drink water, particularly if you arrived in Bogotá recently.
- Bring binoculars if you have them. They are not provided.
- Dress in layers. It is cold at the summit at dawn and warms quickly once the sun is up.
- Avoid bright colours, which make birds harder to approach.

Preguntas frecuentes
Do I need to be a serious birder?
No. The guide is an expert and will pitch the morning to whoever turns up. Complete beginners see a great deal, because someone is telling them where to look.
How many species will we see?
Nobody honest will promise a number. Bogotá has 188 recorded species and the Paramuno trail is one of the best places to find them, but birds do not read itineraries.
Why can’t I just walk this trail myself?
The Sendero Paramuno is not open to general visitors. Access comes with a guided birding tour.
Is the altitude a problem?
3,152 metres is high enough to notice. The walking is gentle, but if you flew in yesterday take it slowly and say so to your guide.
What if the weather is bad?
Cloud and drizzle are normal on Monserrate and birds carry on regardless. Bring a waterproof layer.
More wild mornings near Bogotá
For a full day of cloud forest instead of a summit morning, the Chicaque day trip is the region’s other serious birding site. Higher and wilder, the Chingaza páramo hike reaches Andean bear country. Just need the ride? See tourist transport in Bogotá.
