An hour and a half east of Bogota, past La Calera, the road climbs into a landscape most of the city has never seen: the paramo. This guided day takes you into the Ecopalacio reserve, 2,700 hectares of recovering high-Andean wilderness on the edge of Chingaza National Park, on a trail that ends at the Penas Blancas viewpoint above 3,100 meters. A private vehicle picks you up at your hotel at 6:30 in the morning and returns you to the same door about nine hours later, with the driving, the entrance, and the guiding all handled.

The reserve has a story worth the early start. Until 1999 this was a working limestone quarry; today the old rock face is a lookout over a valley of frailejones, cloud forest, and Andean streams, in an ecosystem that supplies most of Bogota’s drinking water. Your guide reads the trail as you walk it: bear tracks when they appear, hummingbirds and tanagers from the reserve’s 186 recorded bird species, and the strange, slow-growing giant groundsels that make this corner of the Andes look like nowhere else.

How the day works

• Hotel pickup at 6:30 AM. The early departure is deliberate: trail conditions and light are at their best in the morning. Your driver collects you at your Bogota hotel and heads east through La Calera.
• The drive up (about 1.5 hours). Out of the city and into the highlands surrounding Chingaza, a protected wetland system that provides the capital with 70 to 80 percent of its water.
• Reserve entry and orientation (about 30 minutes). Entrance to the Ecopalacio reserve is included; your guide briefs you on the route before you set off.
• The hike to Penas Blancas (about 3.5 hours). The Rincon del Oso route climbs through moss-draped cloud forest and opens onto the paramo plateau, where stands of Espeletia uribei frailejones grow a single centimeter per year. Roughly 7 kilometers with some 500 meters of elevation gain, walked at a steady, unhurried pace.
• Mountain snack at the summit (about 30 minutes). A locally prepared snack, included, eaten at the viewpoint where the old quarry face drops away into the valley.
• The return (about 2 hours). Back down the trail and back to your hotel door.

Good to know

• This is a real hike. Rated moderate: about 7 kilometers with 500-plus meters of climbing, on uneven paramo ground with stream crossings and steep sections near the summit. Reasonable trail fitness is required. Hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes with grip are required; sneakers are not suitable.
• Weather: Chingaza is one of Colombia’s wettest highland ecosystems, and rain can arrive fast even on clear mornings. Bring a waterproof rain jacket in any season.
• Altitude: the trail tops 3,100 meters. If you are arriving from sea level, give yourself at least a day in Bogota to acclimatize first, pace the ascent, and drink water.
• Language: the standard guide speaks Spanish. If you want an English-speaking guide, select that option at booking; it is not automatic.
• Reserve rules: no single-use plastics inside the reserve, so bring a reusable bottle of at least one liter. No pets, alcohol, cigarettes, or drones.
• Who it suits: travelers from age 3 with reasonable fitness. Not recommended for pregnant travelers or people with heart conditions.
• Cancelación: free up to 48 hours before the start; within 24 hours, non-refundable. Book at least 2 days ahead.

How hard is the hike, honestly?

Moderate, and the label is accurate: 7 kilometers, 500 meters of climbing, uneven ground, and a full day on your feet. You do not need mountaineering experience, but you do need working fitness and proper footwear. If you are unsure, write to us before booking and describe your usual activity level; we will tell you plainly whether it fits.

Will I see an Andean bear?

This is bear habitat, and your guide tracks the signs, but sightings of South America’s most elusive large mammal are never guaranteed. What the trail reliably delivers: frailejon fields, cloud forest, the quarry-turned-viewpoint, and a good share of the reserve’s 186 bird species.

Is the guide bilingual?

The standard guide is Spanish-speaking. An English-speaking guide is available as an option you select at booking, so if you need English, choose it there and the day runs fully in English.

What should I bring?

Hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, warm layers, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle of at least a liter. Lunch is not included, so eat well beforehand or bring something for after the snack stop.

Why the 6:30 AM start?

Paramo weather is at its clearest and calmest in the morning. Leaving early puts you on the trail in the best conditions and back in Bogota by late afternoon.
