Sumapaz is the largest páramo on earth. It sits directly south of Bogotá, and almost nobody goes. Frailejones stand in silence across the hills, water collects in black lagoons, and the whole system quietly supplies the city’s drinking water. This is a full day up there with a guide, walking to Laguna de Sie, with breakfast and lunch built in.

How the day works

  • Your driver collects you from your hotel in Bogotá and heads south into the reserve.
  • Breakfast on the way, included.
  • A guided walk to Laguna de Sie through open páramo, rated easy but taken slowly because of the altitude.
  • Lunch, included.
  • Your driver returns you to Bogotá. Around eight hours door to door.

Good to know

  • Hiking shoes and layered clothing. Páramo weather moves between sun, mist and cold wind within the hour.
  • Sunscreen, a hat and a waterproof jacket. Above 3,500 metres UV is strong even under cloud.
  • The trail is rated easy, but it is above 3,500 metres. Walk slowly and drink water.
  • This is a protected water reserve. Stay on the path and take everything out with you.
  • Around eight hours in total.

Preguntas frecuentes

How is this different from the Chingaza hike?

Chingaza is east of the city and denser, with cloud forest edges and Andean bear country. Sumapaz is south, higher, more open and much emptier. Sumapaz also includes both meals.

Is the altitude going to be a problem?

You will feel it above 3,500 metres. The walking itself is easy and the guide sets a slow pace. If you arrived in Bogotá in the last day or two, mention it when you book.

What is a frailejón?

The plant that defines the páramo. Thick silver leaves, a slow grower, and the reason this landscape holds water so well. You will be surrounded by them.

Are both meals really included?

Yes, breakfast and lunch. It is one of the few full days from Bogotá where you do not need to plan food.

Is the guide bilingual?

Yes, English and Spanish.

More páramo and high country

El Chingaza hike is the other great páramo day from Bogotá, east instead of south. For water rather than open moor, the La Chorrera hike reaches Colombia’s tallest waterfall. Need the vehicle only? See our full-day chauffeur.
