Two days north of Bogotá, covering the two things everyone wants to see and usually rushes. Day one is Zipaquirá and the Salt Cathedral. Day two is Villa de Leyva, the largest cobbled plaza in South America, with a night in between so neither is done at speed. Private guide throughout, lunch both days, and a hotel with breakfast.
How the day works
- Day one. Private pickup from your Bogotá hotel and north to Zipaquirá, into the Salt Cathedral carved 180 metres inside a working salt mine. Lunch included. On toward Villa de Leyva in the afternoon, checking into a three-star hotel for the night.
- Overnight. Villa de Leyva after the day-trippers leave, which is when the town is at its best.
- Day two. Breakfast at the hotel, then Villa de Leyva and the surrounding valley: the plaza, the colonial streets, and the sites around town. Lunch included.
- Return to Bogotá in the evening, dropped at your hotel.

Good to know
- Waterproof, comfortable walking shoes. Most of this tour is on foot, across uneven ground inside the salt mine and cobblestones in Villa de Leyva.
- Pack a light overnight bag you can carry. You move between several places across the two days.
- Layers and sunscreen. Zipaquirá and Villa de Leyva sit at different altitudes and the weather shifts through the day.
- Dinners are not included, which leaves you free to pick somewhere on the plaza.
- This is the only multi-day tour we run from Bogotá.

Preguntas frecuentes
Why two days instead of one?
Because Villa de Leyva in a single day from Bogotá means around six hours in the car for a couple of hours in the town. Staying overnight gives you the plaza in the evening and again in the morning, which is the whole point of going.
What kind of hotel?
A three-star in Villa de Leyva, with breakfast included. Tell us when you book if you have preferences on room configuration.
Can we do it the other way round?
The order is set by driving distance and site opening hours. If you have a reason to reverse it, ask when you book and we will tell you honestly whether it works.
Is dinner included?
No, deliberately. Villa de Leyva’s plaza has good places to eat and most people would rather choose.
How much walking?
A fair amount, on uneven surfaces. The salt mine has ramps and steps, and Villa de Leyva is cobbled throughout, which is harder underfoot than it looks.
The single-day versions
Short on time? Villa de Leyva in one guided day covers the town with Sisga and Ráquira on the way, and the Salt Cathedral and Guatavita day pairs Zipaquirá with the lake instead. For transport only, see our private transfer to Villa de Leyva.
