Bucaramanga to San Gil: the road crosses the Chicamocha canyon at a bridge that has been down to one lane since July

Ninety-six kilometres, two to two and a half hours, and almost all of the interest is in one place. At kilometre 53 the road drops to the floor of the Cañón del Chicamocha and crosses the river at the Pescadero bridge — where the river has been scouring the ground out from under the carriageway since July 2026. The Ministry of Transport restricted it by resolution, traffic runs on one lane, and the engineer overseeing the repair said in August that the permanent fix is months away. A kilometre further on is the cable car everyone comes for. This page puts both in one place, with dates.

The bridge at the bottom of the canyon

This is the fact that shapes the journey, and most pages selling this transfer do not mention it at all.

At kilometre 53+024 of Ruta 45A07, between Piedecuesta and Aratoca, the road reaches the floor of the canyon and crosses the río Chicamocha at the Pescadero bridge. The river's current eroded the ground out from under the carriageway there, and the Ministry of Transport imposed a restriction by Resolución 3351 del 12 de julio de 2026: one lane, light vehicles only, heavy goods vehicles prohibited in both directions, with control points including the La Playa service station at Pescadero.

Press reporting of 21 July 2026 described the cause as socavación by the río Chicamocha at kilometre 53, said passage remained restricted to a single lane, and quoted the head of transit and transport for Santander, Mayor Iván Ferney Acosta Ramírez, recommending that drivers reduce speed through the sector.

On 20 August 2026, five weeks into the emergency, the engineer acting as works overseer, Carlos Pieschacón, was quoted on the timeline for the permanent repair — a wall with deep foundations — as entre 6 y 8 meses, and that before cuatro o cinco meses no va a estar listo.

Both of the dated statements above are press instead of an official bulletin, and we mark them that way. The resolution itself is the Ministry's.

What the road does

Bucaramanga to San Gil is not a highway run. It is a descent into a canyon and a climb out of it, and the profile is the whole story.

The Cañón del Chicamocha runs 227 kilometres with an average depth of about two kilometres, and is deepest in the stretch between Aratoca, Cepitá, Los Santos and Jordán — which is precisely the stretch this road crosses. Those figures come from the Cámara de Comercio de Bucaramanga, a trade body, not a government source, and we flag that instead of dressing it up as official.

You will see the canyon described as deeper than the Grand Canyon. We do not publish that comparison, because it is a promotional line instead of a measured claim, and the real figures above are impressive enough without it.

What the descent means in practice is continuous gradient and continuous curve for a long stretch in each direction, at low altitude and high temperature at the bottom, in a vehicle that is either braking or climbing for most of an hour. San Gil sits at 1.114 metres; the canyon floor is a long way below both ends of the journey.

It is a spectacular piece of road and it is not a relaxing one. If anyone in your party is prone to car sickness, this is the Colombian road where it will show up, and sitting in front helps more than anything else we can offer.

The toll the Bogotá route never pays

Here is a small thing we like, because it shows why direction matters more than distance.

The Peaje Curití sits on the carretera San Gil – Aratoca at PR 11+320, north of San Gil, and it is operated by INVÍAS directly, not by a concession. Approaching San Gil from Bogotá you come up from the south and never cross it. Approaching from Bucaramanga you come down from the north and always do.

So our Bogotá page tells you Curití is not on your route, and this page tells you it is. Both are correct, and the difference is the direction of travel.

On the rate: INVÍAS updated its stations on 16 January 2026 under Resolución 062 del 15 de enero de 2026, raising them 5,10% across 38 toll stations in 16 departments, with $553 of every rate going to the road safety fund, FOSEVI. That much is INVÍAS's own. Press reporting of 17 January 2026 put the resulting Category I rate at Curití, Oiba and Los Curos at $12.700; we give that figure as press, not as an INVÍAS table, because the station-by-station annex is published as an image, not as text.

INVÍAS also operates a differential tariff at Curití for local residents, transporters and workers, established by resolution. It is documented in advance and is not something a visitor can request at the booth.

Our transfers include tolls in the price agreed before you travel, so none of this arrives as a surprise. We publish it because a quote you cannot check is a quote you should not trust.

Panachi, and the four cable-car windows

The Parque Nacional del Chicamocha sits at km 54 of this road — about fifty minutes from Bucaramanga, and, as you will have noticed, one kilometre past the restricted bridge. The road problem and the region's main attraction are effectively in the same place.

Now the fact that ruins more visits than anything else:

The crossing itself is 6,3 kilometres and the system carries 500 passengers an hour. It descends into the canyon and climbs the far side, which is why it is the thing people remember.

The park is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Its published hours are Wednesday to Friday 10:00–18:00 and weekends and holidays 09:00–18:00. A Monday transfer from Bucaramanga that was booked to include Panachi is a wasted day, and it happens often enough that we ask the question when you book.

Individual attractions inside run from $4.000 for the children's farm to $250.000 for a paragliding flight. Entry is paid to the park, not to us.

Put the two halves of this page together and the planning rule is simple: the cable car window sets the departure time, and the departure time sets everything else. Not the distance.

San Gil at the other end

San Gil is 96 kilometres from Bucaramanga, sits at 1.114 metres, covers 149,5 km², and runs an average of 24°C with a maximum around 32 and a minimum around 15. The río Fonce runs through it. Those are the Alcaldía de San Gil's own figures.

The official phrase for it is capital turística de Santander. You will also see it called the adventure capital of the world. No official body says that — it is marketing, and we mark it as marketing.

On rain, because it decides what a day there is like: the IDEAM normals for 1991–2020 at the Hacienda el Mamonal station give San Gil 1.181,4 mm across 139,5 rain days a year. The driest month is January at 16,6 mm on 2,6 days; the wettest is May at 160,4 mm on 17,1 days. One caveat: that station sits at 1.408 m, nearly three hundred metres above the town it is named for.

How long it takes

The Alcaldía de San Gil gives the road at 96 km, two to two and a half hours, and calls it the recommended way in. We would stand behind that in normal conditions.

Conditions at Pescadero are not currently normal. With a single lane at the canyon floor and freight held at control points, the plain answer is that the two-and-a-half-hour figure is a floor, not an estimate, and that the variance is entirely in one kilometre of road.

So we quote this route by departure time, not duration, we check the Pescadero position on the morning, and if you are connecting to a flight at the Bucaramanga end we will build in more margin than the distance suggests. That is the whole of our advice, and it is worth more than a number.

Common questions

Is the Bucaramanga to San Gil road open?

Yes, for light vehicles. The Ministry of Transport restricted km 53+024 on Ruta 45A07, at the Pescadero bridge, by Resolución 3351 del 12 de julio de 2026: one lane, light vehicles, heavy goods vehicles prohibited in both directions. A private car or van passes. We check the current position before every transfer.

Why is the bridge restricted?

The current of the río Chicamocha eroded the ground under the carriageway at kilometre 53. Press reporting of 21 July 2026 described it as socavación and quoted the Santander transit chief recommending reduced speed through the sector.

When will it be fixed?

No completion date has been published. On 20 August 2026 the engineer overseeing the works was quoted saying a wall with deep foundations could take between six and eight months, and that it would not be ready in under four or five. That is press, not an official timeline.

How long does the drive take?

The Alcaldía de San Gil gives 96 km and two to two and a half hours. With the single-lane restriction at Pescadero that is a floor and not an estimate, so we quote by departure time and check the position on the morning.

How many tolls are there?

The one that matters on this route is Peaje Curití, on the San Gil – Aratoca road at PR 11+320, operated by INVÍAS. Approaching San Gil from Bogotá you do not cross it; from Bucaramanga you do. Can we stop at the Chicamocha cable car on the way?

Yes, and it is the usual reason to take this road in daylight. The park is at km 54, about one kilometre past the restricted bridge. But the cable car runs in four windows only — 10:30 to 11:00, 12:30 to 13:00, 14:30 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 17:00 — so the window sets the departure time.

Is the park open every day?

No. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Published hours are Wednesday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00, and weekends and holidays 09:00 to 18:00.

What does the park cost?

Its own 2026 prices: the Panachi combo with park, aquapark and cable car is $108.000 for an adult and $79.000 for a child aged 2 to 8; park and aquapark $65.000 and $55.000; park alone $58.000 and $43.000. Individual attractions run from $4.000 to $250.000. Paid to the park, not to us.

Is the canyon deeper than the Grand Canyon?

That is a promotional line instead of a measured comparison, and we do not repeat it. What the Cámara de Comercio de Bucaramanga publishes is that the Cañón del Chicamocha is 227 km long with an average depth of about two kilometres, deepest between Aratoca, Cepitá, Los Santos and Jordán.
