Things to do in Cali: what each one costs to reach, and the two that start before dawn

Cali's attraction list is easy to find and close to useless without the logistics attached. The mountain everyone photographs needs a reservation and lets you through the gate only between 6:00 and 8:00 in the morning. The cheapest ride in the city is $3.500 and the cheapest taxi is $7.100, both set in December by name. And the day trip that appears on most Cali lists sits inside a US Do Not Travel area. This is the list with the transport, the hours and the rules attached.

Written by the ground transport company that drives this city. The park rules, hours and sectors come from Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia directly; the fare from Metro Cali; the zoo's hours and prices from the zoo. The taxi decree and the park tariff reach us through regional press, and we say so on the line. Where the city's own site would not answer us, we say that too.

What it costs to move around Cali

Start here, because it changes which of the things below are worth doing on which day.

The MIO

Cali's bus rapid transit system charges $3.500 a journey, up from $3.200, effective 10 January 2026. Metro Cali S.A., the public company that runs the system, published the change itself. The mayor, Alejandro Eder, described it as "un reajuste responsable, basado en criterios técnicos y sociales, que no sólo cuida el bolsillo de los caleños".

The MIO reaches most of the city and none of the things on this page that matter. It is excellent for crossing Cali and no use at all for a park gate at dawn.

The taxi tariff, in full

Cali's 2026 tariff comes from Decreto 1084 de 2025, issued 27 December 2025. These are the figures as reported by El País, the regional daily:

The night surcharge is bounded by the decree: "El recargo nocturno que se estipula en el presente artículo solo podrá cobrarse durante el período comprendido entre las 19:00 horas y las 06:00 horas del día siguiente". Before seven in the evening it does not apply.

Where that puts Cali nationally

Every Colombian city sets its own minimum by decree, and the spread is wider than visitors expect:

Cali is the cheapest of the five, and Cartagena's minimum is 72% higher. If you are coming from the coast, the city will feel inexpensive to move around, and it is.

Farallones, and the gate that opens at six

Parque Nacional Natural Farallones de Cali is the reason the mountains behind the city look like that. It covers 196.429,90 hectares and climbs from 200 to 4.100 metres above sea level, which is why one park contains both cloud forest and páramo.

It is also the most misdescribed item on every Cali list, because almost nobody writes down the rules. Here they are, from Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia:

The other named attractions are the sendero El Manto de La Virgen and La Oculta.

What that 6:00 to 8:00 window means in practice

You leave Cali in the dark. There is no version of a Pico de Loro morning that starts at a civilised hour, and there is no version where a car summoned on an app is waiting at the gate when you come back down five or six hours later with no signal. This is the clearest case on the whole page for a driver who is paid to wait, and we would say that even if we did not sell it.

What it costs to go in

Entry fees changed on 19 December 2025 under Resolución 551 of Parques Nacionales Naturales. As reported by El País:

A note on how we got these. The resolution itself is published by Parques Nacionales as a scanned PDF that machine reading cannot open, and the park's older fee page still shows the previous, higher schedule. So the figures above are the resolution as reported in regional press, not the resolution read directly, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. The park's own rules, hours, sectors and reservation requirements above are read directly from Parques Nacionales.

The hills, and the hours the authorities set

Cali has three hills people climb: Cristo Rey, the Cerro de las Tres Cruces and Yanaconas. They are the city's most photographed viewpoints and also the part of the Cali list where the security arrangements are real and published.

For Semana Santa 2026, when the ascents are busiest, the authorities set an authorised window of 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. across the three hills. For the Cerro de las Tres Cruces specifically, entry was restricted to the Chipichape sector and required institutional accompaniment. Minors had to carry identification, pets were not allowed, and the reasoning given for the closing time was blunt: outside the authorised hours there is no official supervision and no emergency service on the hill.

What is in the city

Zoológico de Cali

Colombia's best-known zoo, and the one attraction on this page with no logistics problem at all — it is in the city, at Carrera 2 Oeste Calle 14 Esquina, and it is a taxi minimum away from most of the places visitors stay.

San Antonio

The colonial quarter on the hill, and the part of Cali that looks like the photographs: low houses, a chapel at the top, a park where the city goes to sit in the evening. It is walkable once you are in it, and it is the one neighbourhood where we would tell you to be dropped at the bottom and walk up instead of having a car circle.

El Gato de Tejada and the río Cali

The riverside sculpture by Hernándo Tejada and the row of cats other artists added around it, along the Avenida del Río. Free, outdoors, and a half hour, not an afternoon.

Museo La Tertulia

Cali's modern art museum, also on the river. Check its current hours before you go; they have moved more than once and we will not print a timetable we cannot source today.

The salsa, and why it is a transport question

Cali calls itself the world capital of salsa and it is not an idle claim, but the places that earn it are not all in the centre. Juanchito sits across the river on the way out of the city, and Menga is north on the road towards Yumbo. Both are night destinations reached by road, at the hours when the $1.800 night surcharge applies and when the number of cars willing to come back out for you drops. Getting there is easy. Getting back at three in the morning is the part worth arranging.

The calendar that decides your trip

Two events change what Cali is like, and both fill the city.

Festival de Música del Pacífico Petronio Álvarez

The largest Afro-Pacific music festival in Latin America, held in Cali. The 2026 edition ran from 9 to 17 August. If you are reading this after that, the festival is an August fixture and the next edition is the one to plan around.

Feria de Cali

The city's own fair, at the end of December. The Alcaldía's bulletin for the 68th Feria is published under a headline naming its start as 25 December, and the fair has historically run through to the 30th. We have not been able to open the city's page to read the detail — it returns an error to automated reading — so treat the dates as the long-standing pattern and confirm the current year's programme with the organisers.

The trips west, and what two governments say

This is the section most Cali articles leave out, and it is the one with consequences.

The United States travel advisory for Colombia, Level 3, Reconsider Travel, issued 31 March 2026, places four departments at Level 4, Do Not Travel, in these words: "Arauca, Cauca (excluding Popayán), Valle del Cauca (excluding Cali) and Norte de Santander departments due to crime and terrorism".

The United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, in advice last updated 3 September 2026, advises against all but essential travel to, among other areas, "the western part of Valle del Cauca Department, including Buenaventura", "the municipality of Jamundí, Valle del Cauca" and "the western part of Cauca Department".

We are not telling you not to go. We are telling you that if your travel insurance follows either government's advice, a claim arising on that day may be a different conversation from a claim arising in Cali. Read your policy before you book the whale day, not after. The same parentheses matter going south. Cauca is Level 4 excluding Popayán, so the white city itself is carved out while the department around it is not — see Cali to Popayán. North is the easy direction: Cali to the Coffee Region is named in nobody's advisory.

What we tell our own passengers

• Book Farallones before you book anything else. Three days minimum, thirty days maximum, and the gate closes at eight. Every other item on this page can be moved around it.
• Do the hills first thing. The official windows end at the middle of the day for a reason, and that reason is not the heat.
• Take the MIO across the city and a car out of it. $3.500 is unbeatable for a crosstown hop and irrelevant for everything with a gate or a mountain.
• Ask what the meter is on after seven. The $1.800 night surcharge is legitimate from 19:00. Before that it is not.
• Arrange the ride home from Juanchito or Menga before you go out, not at three in the morning from the door of the place.
• Check the plate, not the driver's name. The plate is bolted to the car and cannot be edited to match your screen.
• If the Pacific is on your list, read your insurance policy first. It is a fifteen-minute job that is very hard to do retrospectively.

Common questions

What is the cheapest way to get around Cali?

The MIO, at $3.500 a journey since 10 January 2026. A taxi minimum is $7.100 under Decreto 1084 de 2025, which is still the lowest minimum of Colombia's five biggest tourist cities.

Do I need to book Farallones de Cali in advance?

Yes. Parques Nacionales states plainly that reservation is necessary. For Pico de Loro the window is a maximum of 30 days and a minimum of 3 days before the visit, so neither a last-minute decision nor a booking made months ahead will work.

What time does Farallones open?

It depends on the sector. Pico de Loro and Cerro Peñas Blancas admit visitors only between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m., every day. Burbujas runs 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Cañón del Anchicayá opens only on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Can children go to Pico de Loro?

No. Pico de Loro and Peñas Blancas do not admit under-12s, because of the difficulty and risk of the trails. Burbujas and the Anchicayá sector do.

How much does it cost to enter Farallones?

Under Resolución 551 of 19 December 2025, as reported regionally: $8.000 for Colombians and CAN nationals or residents under 25, $16.500 for those 25 and over, and $40.000 for non-resident foreigners.

How much is the Zoológico de Cali?

$40.000 for anyone 13 or over, $27.500 for children from 2 to 12, and $30.500 from 65. It opens every day, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Is it safe to go to Buenaventura or San Cipriano from Cali?

Both sit inside the area the United States designates Level 4, Do Not Travel — Valle del Cauca excluding Cali — and inside the area the United Kingdom advises against all but essential travel to. Cali itself is excluded from both designations. Whether you go is your decision; what matters practically is that your travel insurance may treat that day differently, so read the policy before booking.

When is the Feria de Cali?

Late December. The Alcaldía's bulletin for the 68th edition names 25 December as the start and the fair has historically run to the 30th. The city's site would not open for us, so confirm the current year with the organisers before booking around it.

Why is the taxi to the airport different from a normal fare?

Because the airport is not in Cali. Alfonso Bonilla Aragón is in Palmira, and service out to it follows Palmira's transit standards and not Cali's, with the meter covering the Cali portion. Two municipalities, one journey.
