2
Friday after 2 p.m.
4h–5h. Half of Bogotá is heading to Boyacá at the same time.

Arriving at El Dorado and going straight to Villa de Leyva
You do not need to overnight in Bogotá first. We run direct El Dorado to Villa de Leyva transfers, including for late arrivals: your driver meets you inside the terminal with a "Safe Transfers" sign, we track the flight in real time, and delays do not cost you anything extra.
Two notes. First, arriving in the valley after dark means a mountain highway at night — safe, and our drivers do it regularly, but plan a departure before mid-afternoon if you have the choice. Second, if you have just landed from overseas, you go from sea level to 2,640 m and then to 2,140 m in one day; most people feel it. Villa de Leyva is the gentler altitude of the two, which is one reason travelers like it as a first stop.
Stops along the way
A private car is the only option that lets you turn the transfer into the day itself. Common additions, roughly in the order you meet them:
Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral
A cathedral carved into a working salt mine, ~1 hour from Bogotá.
Guatavita
the lagoon behind the El Dorado legend; also reachable as its own Bogotá to Guatavita transfer.
Puente de Boyacá
The battlefield where Colombian independence was decided, directly on Route A.
Sutamarchán
the longaniza capital, a good lunch stop.
Ráquira
The pottery town, 45 minutes from Villa de Leyva. Colorful facades, workshops, and the best souvenir shopping in the region.
Sáchica
Lavender fields and vineyards just before you arrive.
If you would rather have a guide and a structured itinerary instead of a driver and open time, our sister brand Cielo Travel runs exactly that — see the Villa de Leyva, Sisga and Ráquira tour or the Salt Cathedral and Guatavita private tour.

When Bogotá empties into Villa de Leyva
Villa de Leyva is the capital's default weekend escape, and the traffic reflects it. Booking a private transfer matters most exactly when the town is busiest — that is also when buses fill up and hotels sell out.
01
The predictable peaks:
Long weekends Colombia has a Monday holiday roughly once a month, and each one turns the northern corridor into a convoy. Friday out, Monday back.
Semana Santa (Easter Week) the single busiest week of the year in town.
Kite festival (Festival de Cometas), August a national draw, timed to the mid-August long weekend and the Boyacá winds.
Astronomy festival the valley's dark skies and open desert floor make this one distinctive; it draws a crowd well beyond Boyacá.
Festival de Luces, December fireworks and light displays around the Plaza Mayor in the run-up to Christmas.
Festival del Árbol / Nacional del Árbol, October smaller, but it fills hotels.
December–January and mid-June to mid-July Colombian school holidays; steady demand all week, not just weekends.
What this means for your booking: on peak weekends, book the vehicle several days ahead, leave Bogotá before noon on Friday, and return either early Sunday or on Monday morning instead of Sunday evening. We hold the price you were quoted regardless of demand — there is no surge pricing on this route.
