Your driver picks you up door-to-door — hotel, apartment, or airport — and you head out of the Aburrá Valley on a paved mountain highway. The first stretch climbs toward the eastern highlands: curves, cooler air, and green hills opening up as the city falls behind.
You'll pass through Marinilla and El Peñol before the landscape turns to water — the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir spreads out in fingers of deep blue, dotted with islands. The Piedra del Peñol, a 220-metre monolith, rises ahead and is hard to miss.
Your driver can pause at the Piedra so you can take it in, or climb the 740 steps to the top — just ask, or arrange it when you book. From there it's a short final leg into Guatapé itself, air-conditioned the whole way, with luggage help at both ends.
