Why travelers book a driver for this specific trip
1
The waiting is the product.
A one-way ride is easy to arrange in either direction. Finding a reliable ride back from Zipaquirá at 4 p.m., in a town where ride-hailing coverage is thin, is where the day usually goes wrong.
2
No fixed schedule.
Group tours move as a unit. If you want three hours underground instead of ninety minutes, or lunch in the old town afterwards, a private vehicle simply waits.
3
Altitude and cold.
Bogotá is at 2,640 metres and Zipaquirá is not much lower. Travelers newly arrived from sea level frequently underestimate how much a day of walking underground takes out of them, and a car at the door matters at the end of it.
4
Bilingual coordination.
Our 24/7 operations team stays reachable on WhatsApp throughout the day, so if the visit runs long or plans change, you are not negotiating it at the roadside.
Two starting points, one page

From your hotel in Bogotá
The standard version. Pickup from any address in the city — Zona T, Parque 93, Chapinero, La Candelaria, Usaquén — and a return to the same address or anywhere else you choose.
Leave early. A 7:30 or 8:00 a.m. departure clears the northern exit before it congests and puts you at the cathedral close to opening, when the underground chambers are quietest. Departures after 9:00 a.m. mean both heavier traffic on the Autopista Norte and a considerably busier cathedral.
From El Dorado Airport
The version most companies do not offer properly, and the reason this page exists at the airport-facing URL. We collect directly from arrivals at El Dorado and drive north without going through the city centre at all.
Two situations where that makes sense:
- You have a long layover. Be realistic: about 1h30 each way plus 2–3 hours underground plus airport re-entry time. A six-hour layover is not enough. From roughly eight hours it becomes comfortable, and we track your onward flight throughout. If your layover is shorter, a Bogotá city tour with Monserrate through our sister brand Cielo Travel fits the window far better.
- You are heading north anyway. Travelers continuing to Villa de Leyva or the Boyacá highlands often make Zipaquirá the first stop of the drive, not a separate day trip. See our Bogotá to Villa de Leyva transfer for that itinerary.
Turning the drive into a full day
Because a private vehicle waits instead of leaving, the Salt Cathedral pairs naturally with other stops in the sabana. The most common combinations:
Guatavita
the lagoon behind the El Dorado legend; also reachable as its own Bogotá to Guatavita transfer.
Nemocón
a second, smaller salt mine fifteen minutes north, known for its mirror pools and far fewer visitors. Travelers who dislike crowds often prefer it.
Zipaquirá's historic centre
the main square, the cathedral above ground, and lunch. Twenty minutes' walk from the Salt Park and usually skipped by group tours running to a schedule.
Andrés Carne de Res in Chía
directly on the return route, and a good reason to book a driver instead of driving yourself.
Every stop adds waiting time, so we quote it in advance instead of adjusting the price at the end. If you would rather have a guide and a structured itinerary than a driver and open time, our sister brand Cielo Travel runs exactly that — see the Salt Cathedral and Guatavita private tour or the private Lake Guatavita day trip from Bogotá. Same ownership, same vetted drivers, different product.

Executive Sedan

4×4 SUV

Executive SUV
Space, privacy, and stature in one vehicle. Chevrolet Tahoe
For a twelve-hour drive, vehicle choice matters more than it does on a short airport run. Legroom, working air conditioning across a 25-degree temperature swing, and genuine luggage space are not luxuries on this route.
Certified child seats are available as an add-on, and on a route this long we strongly recommend booking them instead of improvising.
