Two towns, no valley, no queue. Filandia sits on a hilltop in the western Andes and has the better views; Salento is the older town and the one on every postcard. Both are bahareque architecture, both are inside the UNESCO Coffee Cultural Landscape, and both are small enough to actually walk.

What this tour is really buying you is the pace. Private transport from Armenia, Pereira, Salento, Filandia or Manizales means you skip the shared jeeps and the bus timetable and stop when you want to — for trout in the square, for a coffee, for the mirador you were not planning on.

How the day works

• Pickup and the drive to Filandia (about 1 hour). From your hotel in Armenia, Pereira, Salento, Filandia or Manizales, through coffee country.
• Filandia on foot (about 1.5 hours). The town sits on top of a hill, and the panoramas over the coffee-growing region from up here are among the best in the area. Main streets, central square, lookout points.
• Salento (about 1.5 hours). Calle Real and the main square, the traditional houses with their coloured balconies, and the mirador that faces the Los Nevados peaks.
• The drive back (about 2 hours). Through the plantations to your hotel.

• Departure is from Armenia, Pereira, Salento, Filandia or Manizales. Select the right rate when you book.
• Transfer time is inside the total duration. The further out you start, the less time at each stop, so the shape of the day depends on where you sleep.
• Salento and Filandia departures are picked up by Willys jeep. From Armenia, Pereira or Manizales it is a car or a van.
• Comfortable walking shoes. Cobbles in both towns and a real incline in Filandia.
• Sunscreen and a light rain layer. The coffee region switches between the two within an hour.
• It runs rain or shine. The towns photograph well in drizzle.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the full day with Cocora?

This one leaves the valley out. You get more time in Filandia and Salento and less driving inside the day. If the wax palms are the reason you came to the region, take the full day with Cocora instead.

What is actually included?

How much walking is there?

Both towns are compact and easy on foot, but expect cobbles and some mild inclines, particularly in Filandia, which is built on a hill.

Where can you pick me up?

Armenia, Pereira, Salento, Filandia or Manizales. From Salento or Filandia you are collected by a traditional Willys jeep; from the cities it is a car or a van.

How do we get to the coffee region in the first place?

We drive that leg. Bogotá, Medellín and Cali, plus a Pereira airport transfer and, from Manizales, a run to Pereira airport at the end.
