Cocora Valley and Coffee Farm: Private Day Tour

The Cocora Valley stops people. Wax palms rising over sixty metres into Andean mist, Colombia’s national tree, in one of the last intact groves. This is the private version of that day: your own guide, your own vehicle, and no shared jeep timetable deciding when you leave.

From the valley the day moves to a traditional coffee farm where you are not a spectator — you walk the planting rows, pick cherries by hand, and follow the process through with the growers. The farm’s barista then runs a tasting of coffee roasted minutes earlier, and teaches you to read it by aroma, colour and flavour. The afternoon is Salento, with free time in it.

How the day works

• Pickup and the drive to Cocora (about 2 hours). Your private vehicle collects you from your hotel or Airbnb in Armenia, Salento, Filandia or Pereira. Be at the entrance ten minutes before departure.
• The wax palms (about 1 hour). Walking the trail with your guide, who covers what the tree means ecologically and why this valley in particular.
• The coffee farm (about 1 hour). Plantation rows, identifying ripe cherries, and why hand-picking is not sentimentality. Then washing, hulling, drying and roasting, step by step.
• Barista tasting (about 1 hour). A structured tasting brewed for your group, and the answer to every question you have had about Colombian coffee.
• Salento (about 1 hour). The bahareque facades, the plaza and the viewpoint over the coffee valleys, then free time for the craft shops.
• Drive back (about 2 hours). To the same pickup point.

• This tour is sold in several shapes. A private full day, a shorter private option, and shared tours limited to a single stop. The full inclusions above apply to the complete private day; shorter and shared options include only the guide and the activity for that stop. Check what you are booking on the calendar.
• Private options include hotel pickup. Shared options meet at Salento’s Plaza de Bolívar. Confirm your meeting point after booking.
• Shoes with grip. The Cocora trails are uneven and get muddy after rain.
• Minimum age three. The Cocora trail is not accessible to strollers or wheelchairs. Talk to us before booking if you have mobility concerns.
• Eat before pickup or budget for Salento. Breakfast and lunch are not included. Your guide will point you at the good places.
• It runs rain or shine. The valley is at its best in mist and the farm section is under cover.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the Filandia, Salento and Cocora full day?

That one is three towns plus the valley and it is shared. This one is the valley, a hands-on coffee farm and a barista tasting, private, with free time in Salento. Take the other if breadth matters more than depth.

How much walking is there?

Around an hour in Cocora on natural trails that can be uneven and muddy after rain. The pace is relaxed and your guide adapts it to you.

Where and when is pickup?

Hotels and Airbnbs in Armenia, Salento, Filandia or Pereira. Your guide meets you at the entrance; be there ten minutes before the scheduled time, which is confirmed after booking.

What if it rains in the valley?

The tour runs anyway. Rain and mist are normal here and make Cocora look considerably more dramatic. Bring a waterproof layer; the coffee farm portion is largely under cover.

Are meals included?

No. That is deliberate — it leaves the Salento free time open for whatever you want to eat. Budget for a meal in town.

How far in advance should I book?

Bookings must be confirmed at least 20 hours before the start time. Earlier is better in high season. Free cancellation is available up to 12 hours before.
