Cali did not adopt salsa, it rebuilt it. The footwork here is faster than anywhere else, low to the ground, precise in a way Cuban and New York styles are not, and the city treats it as identity rather than nightlife. A private lesson with a professional local dancer is the most direct way in.

Four hours in total: pickup, an hour of context, two hours on the floor, and the drive back. No experience needed, and the lesson starts from nothing.

How the session works

• Pickup and the drive to the studio (about 1 hour). Your guide collects you at your hotel or an agreed point, and takes a route through downtown Cali on the way so the city has some shape before you dance in it.
• Where the music came from (about 1 hour). In the classroom, not on the floor. African and Caribbean roots, the route through Cuba, and what Cali did with it that nobody else did.
• The floor (about 1 hour). A choreography, step by step, at your pace. Main moves, timing, technique.
• Back to your hotel (about 1 hour). Or wherever you want to be dropped. Ask your guide which venues locals actually use that night.

Good to know

• Flat shoes with some grip. Not flip-flops, not sandals, not stiff soles. You will be moving for two hours.
• Clothes you can stretch in. Lightweight and not restrictive. Cali is warm.
• Do not eat heavily first. Two hours of footwork on a full stomach is a bad trade.
• Zero experience required. The lesson is designed for complete beginners and builds from the first step.
• It is fully private. Pace and content follow you, not a class.
• Start times. 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00. Mornings if you plan to go out the same night.

Do I need to be able to dance?

No. It starts from zero. The first hour is history and context, the second and third are the floor, built step by step.

What makes Cali salsa different?

The feet. Cuban and Puerto Rican styles put more into the hips; the Cali style is defined by speed and precision below the knee. Your teacher will show you the difference rather than describe it.

How long is the actual lesson?

Two hours with the dancer. The four hours cover pickup, the drive, the lesson and the return.

What time can I start?

Any hour from 09:00 to 14:00. Pick at booking. Morning is better if you want to be out that night.

Can I go dancing afterwards?

Yes, and ask your guide where. Cali’s live scene is real and the good rooms are not the ones on the front of a guidebook.

Can you get me there and back at night?
