Two of Colombia’s most storied places sit an hour apart, north of Bogota, and they belong in the same day. First you go underground: 180 meters down into the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, a working Catholic church carved inside a salt mine, where tunnels of rough-hewn crosses open into a vast nave lit in shifting color. Then you go up and out, to the crater lake of Guatavita at 3,100 meters, where a Muisca ruler once rowed out covered in gold dust and gave the world the legend of El Dorado.

How the day works

• Hotel pickup and the drive north (60 to 90 minutes). Private departures leave at 7, 8, 9, or 10 AM, your choice at booking.
• The Salt Cathedral (about 2 hours). Down into the mine, through the fourteen stations of the cross carved by miners, to the underground nave. This is not a reconstruction; mass is genuinely held here. A valid passport or ID is required for entry.
• Zipaquira town (about 1 hour). The colonial center above the mine: cobbled streets, cafes, artisan shops, at your own pace.
• The drive to Guatavita (75 to 90 minutes) with lunch at a local restaurant along the way on private tours.
• Guatavita village (about 1 hour). The whitewashed town rebuilt in the 1960s after the original was submerged beneath the Tomine Reservoir.
• The sacred lake (about 90 minutes). The forest trail of Guatavita Natural Park climbs to the crater rim, where your guide tells the full El Dorado story at the place it actually happened: the ceremony, the gold offerings, and what the Spanish turned it into.
• The return (60 to 90 minutes). Back to your hotel door by evening.

Private or shared: an honest comparison

• Private (full day): your own guide and vehicle, hotel pickup, lunch, and both entrances included. Departs at 7, 8, 9, or 10 AM. There is also a private Zipaquira-only version if you would rather skip the lake.
• Shared: round-trip transport from Bogota and entrance tickets, departing at 8 AM. No guide and no lunch included; you visit both sites with the group’s schedule. A shared Zipaquira-only version runs hourly from 8 AM to noon.

Good to know

• Days it runs: Tuesday through Sunday. Lake Guatavita closes on Mondays; when a Monday is a public holiday, the tour operates that Monday and skips the following Tuesday. If your date lands on a closure day, we adjust the itinerary or offer an alternative.
• Documents: a valid passport or Colombian ID is required to enter the Salt Cathedral.
• Underfoot: the cathedral is flat, even, underground walking; the Guatavita trail is a moderate hike at 3,100 meters on natural terrain. Closed-toe walking shoes for both.
• Temperature: the mine stays cool and the lake sits at altitude where weather turns quickly. Bring a warm layer whatever the forecast.
• Who it suits: the pace is easy with built-in rests, but the day is not wheelchair accessible, and the altitude hike makes it unsuitable for travelers with heart conditions.
• Cancellation: free up to 12 hours before departure; within 12 hours, non-refundable.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Salt Cathedral worth it, or is it a tourist trap?

It is a working church inside a real mine, and the scale surprises almost everyone who walks in skeptical. What makes the difference is context: knowing how miners’ devotional carvings became a functioning underground cathedral changes what you are looking at. That context is exactly what the guided private day provides.

What is the real difference between private and shared?

Private buys you three things: your own schedule with four departure times, a guide who narrates both sites and handles every logistic, and lunch. Shared buys you the two places themselves at a lower price, on the group’s 8 AM schedule, self-guided. Both use the same entrances and see the same sights.

How demanding is the day physically?

Easy, with one exception: the walk to the Guatavita crater rim is a moderate uphill at 3,100 meters. Taken slowly with the built-in stops, most travelers handle it comfortably; it is not recommended for people with heart conditions.

Can I do just the Salt Cathedral?

Yes. Both the private and shared bookings include Zipaquira-only formats; pick the one you want inside the booking calendar.

Why is the lake closed on Mondays?

Guatavita Natural Park closes every Monday for conservation, and on Tuesday when a holiday falls on Monday. Book any other day and the full combo runs normally.
