Bogotá to Honda: the road down to the Magdalena
Honda is the closest thing Bogotá has to a river town: a colonial port on the Magdalena, a long descent from the savanna, and the one stop worth making on the way north. The catch is the road. The last stretch into it is the piece of this corridor the national road agency keeps having to repair, and the rebuild that would fix it has been designed but not yet built.

The short version
Two roads out of Bogotá, one road in. You can leave on the Autopista Medellín or on the older road through Facatativá and Albán. Both meet at Villeta. From Villeta to Honda there is only one road.
That last stretch is not a concession. INVÍAS manages the Honda – Guaduas – Villeta corridor directly, and in October 2025 awarded new works and supervision contracts worth $27.000 millones across roughly 122 kilometres.
The Villeta – Guaduas section is the weak point. It has a long record of single-lane passes and short closures after heavy rain. Check it before you leave in the rainy season.
The fix exists on paper. The ANI has structured a new concession with seven tunnels and 49 road bridges between Villeta, Guaduas and El Korán. As of mid-2026 it is being contracted, not built.
Honda itself is protected at national level and is one of the eighteen towns in Colombia's Red Turística de Pueblos Patrimonio.

The two ways out of Bogotá
Almost everything about this trip is decided in the first hour, because there are two different roads north-west out of the city and they are not equivalent.
The first is the Autopista Medellín, the Calle 80 corridor, which leaves through Siberia and climbs over the Alto del Vino before dropping into Villeta. It is operated under concession by Concesión Sabana de Occidente, which runs toll plazas at Siberia, at kilometre 09+000, and at Caiquero, at kilometre 67+800.
The second is the older road through Facatativá and Albán, the Los Alpes – Villeta stretch of Ruta 50. That one is operated by Concesionaria Panamericana, whose Jalisco plaza sits at PR 89+250 in the vereda La María, Albán, and has been in service since 2001.
Both end in Villeta, and from there the road to Honda is the same whichever way you came. Which one a driver picks on the day depends on the hour, the weather and what the Policía de Carreteras is doing, which is the main practical argument for not driving this one yourself the first time.
Villeta to Honda, the part that matters
From Villeta the road descends through Guaduas and down to the Magdalena. This is the section that shapes the whole journey, and it is worth understanding why.
Unlike the Bogotá – Girardot corridor or the Autopista Medellín, the Honda – Guaduas – Villeta road is not under a toll concession. It is managed directly by INVÍAS, the national roads institute, under a Gestión Vial Integral contract. On 10 October 2025 INVÍAS awarded a new round of those contracts: $24.450 millones for the works, to the Consorcio CONYCON GVI, and $2.549 millones for supervision, to the Consorcio RCT — $27.000 millones in total, covering approximately 122 kilometres across Cundinamarca and Tolima. The institute framed the award around strengthening la conectividad estratégica entre el centro del país y el Magdalena Medio.
The reason that contract matters is that this is a mountain descent on unstable ground, and it behaves like one. INVÍAS has repeatedly had to impose single-lane passes and short full closures here after heavy rain. One documented example: in March 2022 the road collapsed at kilometre 38 after water infiltrated an internal pipe, and the Ministry of Transport reported it closed for about eight hours while crews stripped the pavement, excavated and rebuilt the section before reopening it the same evening.
Worth knowing: eight hours is the good version of that story. In the rainy seasons the Villeta – Guaduas section is the most likely thing to change your plans on this route, and it changes them at short notice. If you are travelling in April or October, check the state of the road the morning you leave and not the week before.
The road that is coming
There is a plan to fix this properly, and it is worth knowing where it stands so you are not expecting a road that does not exist yet.
The ANI has structured a fifth-generation concession for Villeta – Guaduas – El Korán. The scope is the 18 kilometres of missing dual carriageway between Villeta and Guaduas, the improvement of around five existing kilometres, and the rehabilitation of roughly 58 kilometres between Guaduas and El Korán, with seven tunnels, 49 road bridges and five footbridges. Reported investment is in the region of seven to eight billones de pesos.
On the benefit, the sources differ slightly and we will give you both. National press reporting in May 2026 put the saving at up to an hour between Villeta and El Korán. The Cundinamarca departmental government's own station, in July 2026, described a 140-kilometre corridor saving up to 90 minutes between the centre of the country and the Caribbean and serving around 2,5 million people.
What both agree on is the stage. As of mid-2026 the project is in structuring and contracting. Nobody is driving through those seven tunnels yet.
Tolls, and why we are not giving you a total
Every version of this route has tolls, and how many you pay depends on which road you take out of Bogotá.
| Plaza | Corridor and operator | Category I |
|---|---|---|
| Jalisco | Los Alpes – Villeta, Ruta 50 — Concesionaria Panamericana | $20.100 |
| Guayabal | Chuguacal – Cambao, Ruta 50A — Concesionaria Panamericana | $20.100 |
| Siberia | Autopista Medellín, km 09+000 — Concesión Sabana de Occidente | published by the operator |
| Caiquero | Autopista Medellín, km 67+800 — Concesión Sabana de Occidente | published by the operator |
We are not publishing a single toll total for Bogotá to Honda, and that is deliberate. The corridor is split between two concessionaires and one directly managed stretch, the operators publish their tables separately, and one of them publishes rates only as images we cannot read as text. Quoting a total we cannot verify line by line would be worse than telling you this.
What is certain is the timing. Toll rates on ANI-concessioned roads were updated on 16 January 2026. The same day, INVÍAS raised the rates at the 38 stations it operates directly, in 16 departments, by 5,10 per cent under Resolución 062 del 15 de enero de 2026, tracking the consumer price index published by DANE for the previous year. If you are driving yourself, check the operator's own page in the week you travel.
How long it takes
No Colombian authority publishes a standard journey time for Bogotá to Honda, so we will not invent one.
What we can tell you is where the time goes. The distance is modest by Colombian standards; the descent is not. The public case for rebuilding this corridor rests on a saving of up to ninety minutes, which is a fair measure of how much of the current journey is the Villeta – Guaduas section instead of the distance itself. Add the exit from Bogotá, which on a Friday afternoon is its own project, and the rain, which on this road is not a detail.
The practical rule is the same as on every road out of Bogotá: leave early, travel against the weekend flow, and treat any published time as the version where nothing goes wrong.
What Honda is
Honda is not a resort and it is not a stopover invented for tourism. It is one of the oldest river ports in the country, at the point where the Magdalena stops being navigable from the north, which is why goods and passengers had to come ashore here for three centuries.
That history is formally protected. The urban core of Honda was declared a Monumento Nacional by Decreto 1192 del 26 de mayo de 1977, and is today a Bien de Interés Cultural of national scope. Its Plan Especial de Manejo y Protección was approved by Resolución 217 de 2017 of the Ministry of Culture, covering 64 blocks in two sectors, with a further 49 blocks of influence zone around them. That is a large protected centre by any standard, and it is why the town still looks the way it does.
Honda is also one of the eighteen municipalities in the Red Turística de Pueblos Patrimonio, an initiative of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism with the support of the Ministry of Culture, executed by FONTUR, which works with towns holding national cultural-interest status. The RAP-E Región Central, the public body that groups the central departments, lists Honda in that set as la ciudad de los puentes del río Magdalena.
For a traveller, the practical shape of it is this: a compact, walkable historic centre, the river, the bridges, and a position that makes Honda a natural break on the way north towards La Dorada and the Magdalena Medio, or west towards Mariquita and Ibagué.
The Subienda
The one date most people plan around is the Carnaval de la Subienda. The Dirección de Cultura Departamental del Tolima has confirmed the 56th edition for 19 to 22 February 2026, under the theme Río de Fantasías, with more than thirty cultural, sporting and artistic activities across eight venues in the municipality, free to the public. The department's secretary of culture and tourism, Alexander Castro Salcedo, presents it as a celebration of the river itself.
The carnival takes its name from the subienda, the seasonal upstream run of fish on the Magdalena. It is worth being clear about what that is now. The AUNAP, the national aquaculture and fisheries authority, associates the subienda with the rains and traditionally with the Semana Santa season, and reports the target species as bocachico, nicuro, capaz and bagre. It also reports that the catch across the entire Magdalena basin is now a little over 10.000 tonnes, against 40.000 tonnes at the end of the last century, and that in the 1970s the river yielded some 80.000 tonnes of bocachico alone.
So: go for the carnival, the river and the town. Go with your eyes open about the fish.
Arriving in the heat
Bogotá is cold and Honda is not. You descend from the savanna to the floor of the Magdalena valley in a couple of hours, and the afternoon heat at the bottom is the real thing, with the humidity of a large river on top of it.
Practical version: carry water, bring something to change into, and if you are travelling with children or older passengers, plan to arrive in the morning or the late afternoon, not the middle of the day. Working air conditioning matters more on this road than on most, and it is worth confirming before you book anything.
Common questions
How long does the drive from Bogotá to Honda take?
No authority publishes a standard time, and we will not invent one. What we can say is that the public case for rebuilding the corridor rests on a saving of up to ninety minutes, which tells you how much of the journey is the Villeta – Guaduas descent and not the distance.
Which way should we leave Bogotá?
Either the Autopista Medellín through Siberia, or the older road through Facatativá and Albán. They both arrive at Villeta. The right choice depends on the hour and the weather on the day, which is what a driver who runs the route is for.
How many tolls are there?
It depends on the road you take. Concesionaria Panamericana charges $20.100 for a Category I vehicle at its Jalisco plaza in Albán, and the same at Guayabal on the Chuguacal – Cambao road. The Autopista Medellín has plazas at Siberia and Caiquero, whose rates its operator publishes on its own site. All ANI toll rates changed on 16 January 2026.
Is the Villeta – Guaduas road reliable?
In dry weather, yes. In heavy rain it is the most fragile part of the trip, and INVÍAS has repeatedly had to restrict it to one lane or close it for short periods. It is managed directly by INVÍAS, which awarded new works and supervision contracts for the corridor in October 2025.
Is the new road with seven tunnels open?
No. The Villeta – Guaduas – El Korán concession, with seven tunnels, 49 road bridges and five footbridges, has been structured by the ANI and was still in contracting as of mid-2026.
When is the Carnaval de la Subienda?
The 56th edition runs from 19 to 22 February 2026, with more than thirty activities across eight venues, free to the public, according to the Tolima departmental culture office.
Is Honda worth stopping in on the way somewhere else?
Yes, and that is how most people use it. Its historic centre has been protected at national level since 1977 and covers 64 blocks. It sits on the route north towards La Dorada and the Magdalena Medio and west towards Mariquita and Ibagué.
What should we expect from the weather?
Hot and humid, in contrast to Bogotá. Plan the arrival outside the middle of the day if you can, and make sure the vehicle has working air conditioning.
