Bogotá to Guatavita - Private Transfer and Driver

5-stars-gold

The Laguna de Guatavita sits about 75 kilometres northeast of Bogotá, and the drive takes an hour and a half to two hours depending on which road your driver takes. It is the lagoon behind the legend of El Dorado. A day trip that commonly presents complications when travelers organise it themselves, for reasons that have nothing to do with the drive.

Four things that surprise travelers at Guatavita

1

It closes on the first business day of each week.

Usually Monday, but when that Monday is a public holiday, the park opens and closes on Tuesday instead.

2

Cash only.

There's no cell signal at the reserve, so no card readers work on-site. Admission is paid in Colombian pesos.

3

The reserve has no parking lot of its own.

Vehicles are left in the surrounding towns; more details below.

4

The last guided groups depart well before closing time.

Starting late can mean a two-hour drive only to be turned away at the ticket booth.

First, the naming confusion

Two different places share the name, and travelers regularly book the wrong one.

The Laguna de Guatavita is not in the municipality of Guatavita at all — it sits in neighbouring Sesquilé, roughly 15 kilometres and 35 minutes from Guatavita town.

Guatavita town, properly Guatavita la Nueva, is a whitewashed village built from scratch in the 1960s when the Tominé reservoir flooded the original settlement. It is pretty, good for lunch and crafts, and sits on the water.

Most travelers want both. A private vehicle is the only realistic way to do both in one day, because the public connection between them runs infrequently and mostly in high season.

What happens at the lagoon

This is a protected forest reserve managed by the CAR, not an open park, and the rules are enforced. Knowing them in advance is the difference between a good day and a wasted drive.

Closed the first business day of each week. Normally Monday — but if that Monday is a public holiday the park opens, and closes on the Tuesday instead. Colombia has a lot of Monday holidays, so this catches people out constantly.

Cash only. There is no mobile signal at the park, so no card terminals work. Bring Colombian pesos for admission. The fee is 9.40 USD for foreign visitors.

A guide is mandatory and included in the ticket. Groups depart every 15 to 20 minutes and the walk takes about two hours. You cannot walk the reserve alone.

One set of bathrooms, before the trail begins. There are none along the route.

No pets, no food, no alcohol, no drones. Reusable water bottles are fine; disposable plastic and styrofoam are not.

The trail ends on the other side of the hill. From there it is a short shuttle ride back to the starting area, or roughly 45 minutes on foot.

Buy tickets only at the official window. Do not hand cash to anyone offering to arrange entry on your behalf in the car park.

The reserve sits at 3,100 metres — around 450 metres higher than Bogotá. Travelers who have just arrived in Colombia frequently underestimate this. The walk is a steady climb on a stone path, rated moderate, and it takes more out of you at that elevation than the distance suggests.

Weather is páramo weather: between roughly 12 and 18°C, and capable of turning in minutes. Bring a warm layer and a light waterproof regardless of how Bogotá looks when you leave. The rainiest stretches are March to June and September to November.

Why the parking situation matters

This is the detail that quietly justifies the whole booking. The reserve operates no parking service of its own. The official recommendation is to leave your vehicle in a guarded lot in Sesquilé or Guatavita town and continue by local transport, and the informal lots near the entrance fill early on weekends and holidays.

With a private driver, none of that is your problem. The vehicle is dropped, parked and repositioned by someone who does this route regularly, and it is waiting at the trail exit when you finish — not on the far side of a hill you have just walked down.

The same logic applies to timing. Last groups depart well before closing, so a late start can mean driving two hours to be turned away at the ticket window. We plan departures around that, usually leaving Bogotá between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m.

Making it a full day

Because the vehicle waits instead of leaving, Guatavita combines easily with the rest of the sabana:

Guatavita town and the Tominé reservoir

lunch, crafts, and the waterfront. The natural second half of the day.

Casa Loca

the well-known upside-down house near the reservoir, and a reliable hit with children.

Zipaquirá and the Salt Cathedral

the most requested combination of all, though it makes for a long day. Also available on its own as our Bogotá to Zipaquirá and Salt Cathedral transfer.

Sesquilé and Suesca

for travelers who want the páramo landscape and rock-climbing country instead of another town square.

If you would rather have a guide and a structured itinerary, our sister brand Cielo Travel runs exactly that: see the private Lake Guatavita day trip from Bogotá, the Salt Cathedral and Guatavita private tour, or the Guatavita glamping escape from Bogotá for an overnight version. Same ownership, same vetted drivers, different product.
