Downtown Medellín is where the city argues with itself in public: a plaza of Botero bronzes that anyone can walk into for free, 300 lit columns on the site of what used to be a no-go zone, and a park where the point is to take your shoes off. This is three hours on foot through the historic centre with a bilingual local guide, in a shared group, on a flat and easy route.

How the day works

• You meet your guide at Parque Berrío, in front of the Hotel Nutibara. Look for the yellow umbrella.
• You walk into Plaza Botero, where 23 bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero fill the square, with the Museum of Antioquia alongside it.
• You continue to Parque de las Luces and its 300 illuminated columns, each 24 metres high, then on to La Alpujarra, the government district, and the old Palace of Justice.
• You reach Parque de los Pies Descalzos, the barefoot park, where you can take your shoes off and walk through sand, water and bamboo.
• You pass the old Antioquia railway station and finish at San Antonio metro station, three hours after you started.
