Is MedellĂn Safe? The Two Answers, and Which One Is About You

MedellĂn has the lowest homicide rate of any city in Colombia, and the risk to a foreign visitor went up sharply this year. Both of those things are true, and almost every page you will read about this city picks one and ignores the other. The honest answer is that the danger here is not the one you were worried about, it is very specific, it is growing, and one decision prevents most of it.

The short version

  • The city is genuinely safer than it has ever been. February 2026 was the least violent month in fifty years: 11 homicides, and 19 consecutive days without a violent death.
  • The homicide rate is the lowest in the country — around 4.19 per 100,000 for the first half of 2026, tracking to roughly 9.85 for the year, against a national average near 24.
  • None of that is the risk to you. The risk to a visitor is being drugged and robbed, and it rose about 86 percent this year.
  • It happens where you are staying, not where you were told to avoid. El Poblado and Laureles together account for more than half of the recorded cases.
  • Victims are overwhelmingly men. 87 percent, roughly seven men for every woman.
  • One decision prevents most of it. Do not take someone you met online to the place where you sleep, and do not go to theirs. About a fifth of cases happen inside apartments in gated buildings.

Two true answers, and why you need both

Ask whether MedellĂn is safe and you will get one of two replies. The first is thirty years out of date and involves a dead criminal. The second is a tourism-board answer that tells you it is completely fine now. Neither is useful, because they are answering different questions.

The city itself: better than at any point in living memory

These are the District’s own figures, not an estimate:

WhatThe numberWhen
Homicides in February 202611, with 19 consecutive days without a violent death — the lowest record in 50 yearsAlcaldía de Medellín, 2 March 2026
Homicides year to date111, about 25 percent below the same period the year beforeSecretarĂa de Seguridad, 6 June 2026
Rate for the period4.19 per 100,000, tracking to about 9.85 for the full yearSecretarĂa de Seguridad, 6 June 2026
National average, for comparisonClose to 24 per 100,000AlcaldĂa de MedellĂn, March 2026
Other crimeTheft, robbery, extortion and personal injury all down; intrafamily violence the only indicator slightly upSecretarĂa de Seguridad, June 2026

That is not spin. MedellĂn currently has the lowest homicide rate of any city in Colombia, and it got there over years rather than in a press release. If your fear is being caught in violence between armed groups, that fear is largely obsolete in the parts of the city you will be in.

The visitor: a different risk, moving the other way

Now the part the tourism answer leaves out. While homicides fell, drugging robberies against visitors rose steeply, and they are concentrated exactly where visitors go. Those are two separate crime economies, measured separately, and only one of them is aimed at you.

The actual risk: being drugged, not being shot

The Colombian shorthand is escopolamina or cuentagotas. In practice it covers a range of sedatives and benzodiazepines put into a drink, a piece of food or a sweet, sometimes on skin contact. The victim stays conscious and compliant for a while, then remembers little or nothing. The theft happens during that window: phones unlocked, bank apps emptied, cards used, apartments cleared.

MeasureThe numberSource

The two case counts differ because the police and the District count through different systems over different windows. We are giving you both rather than picking the one that reads better. Both show the same direction and roughly the same size of increase, and the authorities say plainly that under-reporting means the real figure is higher — a lot of people wake up, work out what happened, and get on a plane rather than file a report.

Hold the two facts together. MedellĂn now has the lowest homicide rate in Colombia and the highest number of drugging robberies it has recorded. There is no contradiction. The homicide figure measures violence between armed groups, which the city has spent twenty years dismantling. The drugging figure measures an economy built specifically around visitors, which grew as tourism grew. Only the second one is about you.

Where it actually happens, which is not where you were warned about

This is the part that changes behaviour, and it is the reverse of the usual advice. Cases by comuna on the District’s own system, for 2026 to 8 August:

ComunaCasesWhat it is
El Poblado (14)108The hotel district. Parque Lleras, Provenza, the rooftop bars
Laureles-Estadio (11)106The flat residential grid visitors move to on their second trip
La Candelaria (10)80The centre: Plaza Botero, the museums, the commercial streets
Belén (16)45Residential, south-west
Aranjuez (4)20Residential, north-east
Castilla (5)15Residential, north-west

El Poblado and Laureles are more than half of it. The two wealthiest, greenest, most walkable, most recommended neighbourhoods in the city are where this happens, because that is where the people worth robbing are. Comuna 13, which is the place everyone asks us whether it is safe, is not on this list at all.

Where within those neighbourhoods, from the same reporting:

  • Apartments in gated buildings: 107 cases, about a fifth of the total. That is the single largest venue category, and it means the victim let the person in.
  • Public streets: 89.
  • Bars and cantinas: 71.
  • Hotels and residences: 49.
  • Around nightclubs: 37.

Read that list again. The most dangerous room in MedellĂn, statistically, is the one you are renting.

The four methods, named

The District has dismantled organised networks running each of these. Knowing the shape of them is more useful than a general instruction to be careful.

  • The dating app setup. Contact through an app, a friendly meeting somewhere public, then a move to a private space, then the drug. A network the authorities called Las Tinderianas was broken up in 2026 after taking more than $400 millones COP from victims from Spain, the United States, Italy, Argentina, Mexico and Norway. This is the one the US Embassy has warned about by name.
  • The paseo millonario. A group called Los Calvos operated in Comuna 14, approaching foreigners leaving nightclubs, holding them against their will and forcing transfers out of their bank apps. The vehicle is the trap: an unbooked car outside a club at three in the morning. The same logic applies at the airport, which is why our MedellĂn airport guide spends most of its length on how the arrivals hall works.
  • Street robbery around Lleras and Provenza. A gang was investigated over four months for tracking and directly assaulting people in those specific blocks. Phones and watches, usually from a motorbike.
  • The opportunistic drugging. No network, no plan, just a drink left unattended or a sweet handed to you in the street. A visitor described exactly that in MedellĂn in April 2026 — offered a sweet, drugged, robbed.

Why we are the ones telling you this. Under Ley 1336 de 2009, ground transport companies have a legal duty to inform passengers about Colombia’s laws protecting minors from sexual exploitation, and adherence to that code of conduct is a condition of holding a National Tourism Registry. We hold one: Cielo Travel SAS, RNT 265629. The same networks that run the drugging economy in El Poblado overlap with that world. If a driver, a guide or a hotel offers you anything in that territory, they are committing a crime — refuse and report it.

The six things we tell our own passengers

Our judgement, informed by the figures above and by driving people around this city every week.

  • Never take someone you met online to where you sleep, and never go to theirs. This single rule removes the largest venue category and most of the organised networks. It is not about being suspicious of Colombians; it is about the fact that a fifth of recorded cases happen behind a door that the victim opened.
  • Watch your drink being poured, and do not accept an opened one. Including from someone charming, including in an expensive place. Bars and cantinas are 71 cases.
  • Do not accept food or sweets from strangers in the street. It sounds like advice for a child. It is the documented method.
  • Book the car before you need it. The paseo millonario needs you to get into an unbooked vehicle at the end of a night. If the car is arranged in advance and the driver is named, that method has nothing to work with. The same argument, worked through for the capital, is in Uber in Bogotá.
  • Carry a second phone or a cheap one for nights out, and keep your banking app off it. The theft that hurts is not the handset, it is the twenty minutes of transfers while you are compliant.
  • If you are robbed, do not resist. That is the US Embassy’s explicit advice and ours. Nothing you are carrying is worth it.

And the one that applies to men in particular, since 87 percent of victims are men: the flattery is the method. A stranger showing sudden strong interest in a foreign man in Provenza on a Saturday night is the single most reliable signal in these figures.

Neighbourhood by neighbourhood

WhereWhat to actually expect
El PobladoSafe to walk, day and night, in the ordinary sense. It is also the top comuna for drugging robberies and the subject of the District’s nightlife decrees. The risk here is social, not the street
Laureles and EstadioFlat, residential, pleasant, and second on the same list. Same risk profile as El Poblado, slightly fewer tourists to hide among
Envigado and SabanetaSeparate municipalities, quieter, low on the list. A good answer if you are staying weeks rather than nights
La Candelaria, the centreFine by day for the museums and Plaza Botero, and third on the drugging list. Ordinary daylight care with phones and bags; we would not wander it late at night
Comuna 13The place everyone asks about, and not on the list. Go in the morning with a guide who lives there, or with one of our English-speaking drivers. It is a working neighbourhood carrying about two million visitors a year
The MetroClean, policed and genuinely safe, including the cable lines. Better than a car in rush hour and cheaper than anything else
Anywhere, on a phoneRide-by phone snatching from motorbikes is the routine crime here. Do not stand on a kerb navigating

The full practical version of moving around the city, including the Metro fares and hours, is in things to do in MedellĂn, and our MedellĂn page lists what we run here.

Choosing which of these to sleep in is a separate question, and it has a legal half that most guides skip entirely: our guide to where to stay in MedellĂn compares the bases by airport time and metro access, and shows you how to check in two minutes whether the place you are booking holds the Registro Nacional de Turismo the law requires it to have.

What the official advisories actually say

People quote these badly in both directions, so here is what they say.

  • The US State Department has Colombia at Level 3, Reconsider travel, as of 31 March 2026, across crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and natural disasters.
  • Antioquia and MedellĂn are not on the Do Not Travel list. The Level 4 areas are Arauca, Cauca excluding Popayán, Valle del Cauca excluding Cali, Norte de Santander, and anywhere within about ten kilometres of the Venezuelan border. MedellĂn appears in that advisory mainly for altitude and landslide risk.
  • The advisory is explicit about the mechanism on this page: many US citizens in Colombia have been drugged, robbed and even killed by criminals posing as dates. It tells you never to leave food or drink unattended and to avoid isolated meeting places.
  • The US Embassy in Bogotá issued a specific security alert on 10 January 2024 after eight suspicious deaths of US citizens in MedellĂn between 1 November and 31 December 2023. In the same alert: thefts against foreign visitors up about 200 percent in the third quarter of 2023 year on year, and violent deaths of foreign visitors up 29 percent.

Level 3 is not a reason to cancel a trip; Colombia has sat around that level for years and millions of people visit without incident. It is a reason to read what the level is actually about, which in MedellĂn is not armed conflict.

One more piece of context that shapes El Poblado at night: in March 2024 the AlcaldĂa issued Decreto 248 de 2024, temporarily suspending the demand and solicitation of sexual services in a defined perimeter of El Poblado and banning their promotion through leaflets, images, documents and online platforms, with a parallel measure closing venues around Parque Lleras at 1:00 a.m. These are six-month measures that get renewed or replaced, so check what is in force when you travel.

If something happens

  • 123 is the emergency number across Colombia, for police, ambulance and fire.
  • If you think you have been drugged, go to a hospital, not to bed. Ask for a toxicology screen. It matters medically and it is the only way the case gets counted.
  • Call your bank before you file the police report. The money moves in the first hour; the report can wait an hour.
  • File the report anyway. The authorities say under-reporting is why the real numbers are unknown. A report you file in MedellĂn is what makes the next visitor’s warning accurate.
  • Contact your embassy if you are hurt, hospitalised or without documents. They cannot get your money back, but they can help with papers and hospitals.

So, is it safe

Our answer, plainly. MedellĂn is a safe city to visit and an easy one to be robbed in, and those are not in tension. Go. Walk around. Take the Metro at night. Eat wherever you want. The city is not going to hurt you.

What will hurt you is a specific, organised, growing business that targets foreign men through their phones and finishes in a rented apartment. It is the reason 173 foreigners were robbed here in the first four months of 2026, and it is almost entirely avoidable by not letting a stranger into the room you sleep in.

Everything else — the reputation, the history, the questions your family asked you before you booked — belongs to a version of this city that ended a long time ago. If the trip takes in other cities, is Bogotá safe and is Cartagena safe run the same exercise on the capital and the coast.

Questions travellers ask

Is MedellĂn safe for tourists in 2026?

Yes, in the ordinary sense. Medellín has the lowest homicide rate of any city in Colombia — around 4.19 per 100,000 for the first half of 2026, tracking to about 9.85 for the year, against a national average near 24 — and February 2026 was the least violent month in fifty years. The real risk to a visitor is being drugged and robbed, which rose about 86 percent in 2026 and is concentrated in El Poblado and Laureles.

What is the biggest danger for visitors in MedellĂn?

Drugging robberies. Between January and July 2026 there were 537 recorded cases, up from 289 in the same months of 2025. Eighty-seven percent of victims are men, about a fifth of cases happen inside apartments in gated buildings, and 45 percent fall on Saturdays and Sundays. The usual route is a dating app, a public meeting, then a move somewhere private.

Is El Poblado safe?

Safe to walk in, and top of the list for drugging robberies with 108 recorded cases in 2026. That is not a contradiction: the street is fine, the risk is social and it follows money. Laureles is second with 106. The two neighbourhoods most visitors stay in account for more than half the recorded cases.

Is Comuna 13 safe to visit?

Yes, and it does not appear in the District’s comuna ranking for drugging robberies at all. Go in the morning with a guide who lives there, before the crowd: the route carries between five and seven and a half thousand people on an average day and up to seventeen thousand on a weekend afternoon. Our Medellín page covers how to do it well.

What is the US travel advisory for MedellĂn?

Colombia is at Level 3, Reconsider travel, as of 31 March 2026. Antioquia and Medellín are not among the Level 4 Do Not Travel areas, which are Arauca, Cauca excluding Popayán, Valle del Cauca excluding Cali, Norte de Santander, and the ten-kilometre strip along the Venezuelan border. The advisory does warn explicitly that US citizens have been drugged, robbed and killed by criminals posing as dates.

Are dating apps dangerous in MedellĂn?

They are the documented delivery mechanism for the main risk. The US Embassy in Bogotá issued a security alert on 10 January 2024 after eight suspicious deaths of US citizens in Medellín in November and December 2023, and a network the authorities called Las Tinderianas was dismantled in 2026 after taking more than $400 millones COP from victims from six countries. Meeting in public is not enough on its own — the theft happens after the move to somewhere private.

Is it safe to take the Metro in MedellĂn?

Yes. The Metro, the Metrocable lines and the tram are clean, policed and used by everyone, and they are the safest way to move through the city at rush hour. Ordinary care with your phone applies, as it would anywhere.

Is MedellĂn safe for solo female travellers?

The recorded drugging figures skew heavily male — 87 percent of victims, roughly seven men for every woman — so the headline risk on this page is not primarily aimed at women. That does not make the city risk-free: ordinary precautions about drinks, taxis and walking alone late at night apply as they would in any large city, and the same rule about not going somewhere private with someone you just met holds.

The part of this we can actually take off your hands

A booked car with a named driver removes the paseo millonario entirely, because that method needs you to get into a vehicle you did not arrange at the end of a night. Airport runs, evenings out, day trips to Guatapé, and a driver who knows which streets to avoid at which hour. Cielo Travel SAS, RNT 265629.
