Chicamocha National Park and Cable Car: Private Day Tour

The Chicamocha canyon drops more than 2,000 metres, and the colours of the rock walls move from gold to red through the day. Parque Nacional del Chicamocha sits on the edge of it. The park’s cable car is 6.3 kilometres long, one of the longest in the world, and it is included here, which means you cross the canyon and look straight down at the river.

Eight hours door to door, five of them inside the park, tickets arranged in advance so you walk past the entrance line. One thing to get right before you book: the park is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

How the day works

• Pickup and the drive out (about 1.5 hours). Through the Santander countryside, with the terrain giving itself away before you arrive.
• Five hours in the park. The cable car across the canyon, the zip lines, the monument areas, the recreated Santander colonial towns, and the exhibits on regional wildlife and history. You set the order and the pace.
• The drive back (about 1.5 hours).

• You are on your feet for most of five hours. The ground is generally flat and paved. Comfortable shoes and water.
• Your ticket covers park entry and the roundtrip cable car. Zip lines and other separately ticketed attractions are not included.
• No queue. Tickets are arranged in advance, so you walk straight in.
• Good with children. The park is built as a family destination, and the cable car is usually the part they talk about afterwards.

How much walking is there?

You are on your feet most of the five hours, on generally flat paved paths. Comfortable shoes matter more than fitness here.

How does this compare to paragliding over the canyon?

Different day entirely. This is a full day inside the park with the cable car. Paragliding is a three-to-four-hour trip built around a 15-to-20-minute flight.

How do we get to Santander in the first place?

We drive it. Bogotá to San Gil and Barichara, or from the nearest airport Bucaramanga to San Gil and the Bucaramanga airport transfer.
