The Aburrá Valley makes a different kind of sense from a thousand feet up. This half-day private tour takes you to San Félix, a ridge town northwest of Medellín that is one of the best-known launch sites in Colombia, for a tandem flight of fifteen to twenty minutes with a certified pilot. No experience is needed. The only decision you make is whether you want it calm or acrobatic.

How the day works

• Your private driver collects you from your hotel and crosses the city northwest, passing through San Cristóbal on the way.
• A winding mountain road climbs to San Félix, on the edge of Medellín’s western hills. The drive takes about an hour.
• At the launch site your pilot runs the safety briefing and fits the equipment, then you take off for a tandem flight of fifteen to twenty minutes over the valley.
• You choose the flight: a steady glide, or acrobatic manoeuvres. Tell the pilot before you launch.
• After landing there is time in San Félix before the drive back to your chosen drop-off in Medellín. Four hours in total.

Good to know

• No previous experience is required. Your pilot handles the take-off, the flight and the landing.
• Wear comfortable clothing and closed shoes. Cotton, trainers and sunglasses work well.
• Bring a light jacket. It is colder in the air than on the ground, even though Medellín sits around 23°C to 30°C.
• Photos and video are not included and are arranged directly at the launch site.
• Flying depends on the weather. If conditions are unsafe the operator cancels on the day, and the weather-cancellation terms shown at checkout apply.
• A hat is worth having for the wait at the launch site, where the sun is direct.

Frequently asked questions

How long am I in the air?

Fifteen to twenty minutes. The four hours covers the drive up, the briefing, the wait for your slot and the drive back.

Do I need to run off the edge?

A few steps, with your pilot moving at the same time and the wing already loaded. It is far less dramatic than it looks from the ground.

What if I change my mind at the top?

Tell your guide. Nobody is put in the air who does not want to be, and you can watch from the launch site instead.

Can I get photos of the flight?

Yes, arranged with the pilot at the site for a separate fee. It is not included in the tour.

What happens if the weather turns?

Paragliding is weather dependent and the operator makes the call on the day for safety. If your flight is cancelled for weather, the terms shown at checkout apply.
