Jardín Day Trip from Medellín with Coffee Farm

Jardín is 130 kilometres southwest of Medellín and about as far from the city’s pace as the road allows. Colombia’s Ministry of Culture named it a heritage town, and none of what you see there is reconstructed: the cobblestones, the painted facades and the neo-Gothic basilica on the plaza are the result of a community deciding what it wanted to keep. The day pairs the town with a working coffee farm, and the drive passes Cerro Tusa, the largest natural pyramid in the world.

How the day works

• An early start. Your guide and driver collect you from your hotel and head southwest into the Antioquian countryside, roughly three hours through the western Andes with Cerro Tusa visible from the road.
• You go straight to the coffee farm, which is a working farm instead of a showcase, and follow the full cycle: seedling selection, the plant varieties suited to this microclimate, the hand harvest, the roast and the preparation.
• You taste the result, prepared the traditional Colombian way, which makes considerably more sense after watching every step that produced it.
• You walk Jardín itself, the plaza and the Basilica Menor de la Inmaculada Concepción built between 1916 and 1942, with your guide covering the colonial architecture and the crafts the town still lives on.
• A traditional Paisa lunch is included at a restaurant in a colonial-era building. Then the basilica, the parks on the edge of the centre, and the drive back to Medellín by early evening. Nine hours in total.

• The day starts early to fit the farm, the town and the three-hour return drive. Your exact pickup time is confirmed when you book.
• Jardín averages around 19°C, noticeably cooler than Medellín. Bring a light jacket, and expect afternoon rain between May and November.
• Closed shoes suited to cobblestones and farm ground.
• Bring insect repellent if you react to bites. The farm and the vegetation around it attract them.
• Bring sunscreen. UV exposure is high on open hillside even under cloud.
• The walking is moderate, on cobbles and farm paths, with nothing strenuous.

Frequently asked questions

Three hours each way is a lot. Is it worth it?

It is the trade-off of the day and worth knowing before you book. Jardín is quieter and less visited than the towns closer to Medellín, and the drive itself through southwest Antioquia is part of what you are paying for.

Is the coffee farm a real farm?

Yes. It is a working plantation with a real harvest, not a demonstration set up for visitors, which is why the tasting at the end lands differently.

Is lunch included?

Yes, a traditional Paisa lunch at a restaurant in a colonial building in town. Extra drinks and anything else are on you.

What is the cable car?

Jardín has a small cable car up the hillside above the town. It is optional and not included, and your guide can point you to it if there is time.

How cold does it get?

Jardín sits around 19°C, so a jacket is useful even when Medellín is warm. Afternoon rain is common in the second half of the year.
