Palomino is small, and most people see the part of it between their hotel and the beach. Two hours on a quad covers considerably more: the river and its mouth, the main streets, the stretch where the Troncal del Caribe runs past, and then the sand and woodland tracks that locals use and visitors generally never find.

It is a shared tour and it is not a nature walk. You are driving, on loose ground, in the heat, which is either exactly what you want from an afternoon or not at all.

How the ride works

• Motorbike pickup and the safety briefing (about 15 minutes). Your guide collects you from your hotel and takes you to the starting point, where you get a full briefing and learn to operate the quad. Ask your questions here rather than on the trail.
• The river and the main roads (about 15 minutes). Out along Palomino’s main roads for the first views of the river and the point where it meets the Caribbean.
• Sixth avenue, tenth avenue, the Troncal del Caribe (about 15 minutes). Across town, with the main coastal highway in sight.
• The tracks (about 15 minutes). Off the busier sections into shortcuts, sand and woodland, which is the half of the tour people remember.
• Back by motorbike (about 15 minutes). Your guide’s driver meets you at the end of the ride.

• You get to the start by motorbike. That is how Palomino works; the quad is for the tour itself.

• Sunscreen and a hat. The Caribbean sun here is strong all year.
• This is a rural region and local guides may not be fully bilingual.
• Runs rain or shine. Wet trails make the ride better, not worse, though you will finish muddier.
