Santa Marta to Tayrona: Which Gate, How Far and When It Is Open

Four entrances, four different distances, four different sets of opening hours and four different prices. Most pages about this drive mention one of them. This one covers all four, with the 2026 fees, the three annual closures and the reason the road works that cut off Palomino this year never touched Tayrona.

The short version

  • El Zaino is 32 km from Santa Marta on the Troncal del Caribe, about 45 minutes. It is the main gate.
  • Calabazo sits at kilometre 20, about 35 minutes, and it opens earlier than any other gate.
  • Tickets are sold at the gate only. There is no advance booking, and anyone selling you entry elsewhere is not official.
  • The park closes three times a year, and the next window, 19 October to 2 November 2026, is under six weeks away.
  • All four sectors have been open since 3 July 2026, after a long unplanned closure earlier in the year.

The four gates, and which one you want

Parques Nacionales operates four land entrances to the park, and they are not interchangeable. They are different distances from the city, they open and close at different times, and one of them costs less than half of what the others do.

Calabazo opens at six in the morning, every day of the year. That is two hours before Zaino in low season and an hour before it in high season, and it is the most useful fact on this page for anyone who wants the beaches without the crowd. The trade is that Calabazo puts you on a long uphill walk, not a short flat one.

High season, as Parques Nacionales defines it, is 1 December to 31 January, 1 June to 31 July, Semana Santa, public holiday bridges and school recess. Everything else is low season, which is when the gates stay open longest.

What it costs to get in

These are the 2026 rates published by Parques Nacionales. They are per person, per day, and they are paid at the gate.

VisitorLow seasonHigh season
Foreign non-resident$81.000 COP$96.500 COP
Colombian or CAN national, over 25$36.500 COP$43.000 COP
Colombian or CAN national, 5 to 25$27.500 COP$30.500 COP
Bahía Concha, foreign non-resident$43.500 COP all year
Bahía Concha, Colombian$15.000 to $26.000 COP all year

There is no advance booking, and that matters. Parques Nacionales states outright that availability depends only on the tickets sold each day at the taquilla. No website sells you park entry in advance. During the February 2026 troubles the authority itself reported people charging unauthorised entry fees at the gates, so if someone offers to sell you a park ticket anywhere other than the official window, it is not a park ticket.

The three closures, and the one coming in October

Tayrona shuts completely three times a year, by agreement with the four indigenous peoples of the Sierra Nevada, for their own environmental and cultural work. The 2026 dates published by Parques Nacionales are:

  • 1 to 15 February, called Kugkui shikasa
  • 1 to 15 June, called Saka Juso
  • 19 October to 2 November, called Nabbatashi

The October closure is under six weeks away at the time of writing. If you are planning a trip for the second half of October, that is the first thing to check and the easiest one to get wrong, because the dates do not line up with any calendar month.

The published dates are a floor, not a guarantee

This is the part worth understanding. The February 2026 closure was published as fifteen days and it did not run for fifteen days. On 11 February there was an institutional intervention in the Cañaveral sector. On 16 February there were blockades at the El Zaino and Neguanje entrances. Parques Nacionales issued Resolución 090 on 16 February and Resolución 091 on 17 February, extending the closure with no end date, in its own words to protect the life and integrity of visitors, communities and staff and to restore full institutional control. The park did not return to normal operation across all four sectors until 3 July 2026, nearly five months after the fifteen-day window had been due to end.

So the practical rule is: treat the published closure windows as the minimum, and confirm the park is open in the week you travel and not the month you book.

The bridge that closed the coast road, and why Tayrona was fine

On 3 February 2026 the bridge over the Mendihuaca river collapsed and INVÍAS closed the Santa Marta to Palomino road completely. The detour ran inland through Valledupar. It is the single biggest thing to happen to this coastline in years, and a lot of travel advice about the region still has not caught up with it.

Here is the detail nobody joins up. The collapsed bridge is at kilometre 37. The El Zaino gate is at kilometre 32, so Tayrona sits five kilometres on the Santa Marta side of the break and the road closure that cut off Palomino for eight weeks never affected access to the park at all.

The crossing reopened on 31 March 2026 on a military modular bridge, and our Palomino page sets out what that means for anyone going further east, because it is four metres twenty wide and that is one lane.

How to get there

OptionSuitsThe catch
Public bus or colectivoOne traveller on a budget with a flexible dayThey leave from the public market area in the city centre, not from a terminal, and not from anywhere near the airport or El Rodadero. They drop you at the gate and you queue
Organised tourFirst-time visitors who want the day decided for themYou arrive when the tour arrives, which is when everyone else arrives. Park entry is usually not included in the price
Private transferAnyone who wants the Calabazo six o'clock opening, families, and anyone combining it with the drive eastCosts more than a bus seat. It is the only option that lets you choose the gate and the hour
Self-driveConfident drivers already renting for the coastParking at Zaino, and a toll on the way

The shared transport point is worth spelling out because it catches people. The colectivos into the park leave from the public market building in the middle of Santa Marta, which the Alcaldía has described as the departure point for transport into the Sierra Nevada and its surroundings, moving around five hundred tourists a day in high season. If you are staying in El Rodadero or near the airport, getting to that departure point is itself a journey across the city before your day starts.

When to leave

  • For Calabazo, leave by 5:15 in the morning. The gate opens at six and the whole advantage of that gate is being through it early.
  • For Zaino in low season, there is no rush at the gate but there is at the far end. Entry runs to five in the afternoon but everyone has to be out by five, so a late entry buys you nothing.
  • In high season, Zaino stops admitting at three. Arrive by early afternoon at the latest and preferably in the morning.
  • Bahía Concha is the half-day option. Fifteen minutes of unpaved road from the city, the cheapest ticket in the park, and back for lunch if you want.

Questions travellers ask

How far is Tayrona from Santa Marta?

The main El Zaino gate is 32 kilometres from Santa Marta on the Troncal del Caribe towards Riohacha, which Parques Nacionales puts at about 45 minutes by vehicle. Calabazo is closer, at kilometre 20, roughly 35 minutes.

Which entrance to Tayrona should I use?

El Zaino for the famous beaches on the shortest walk. Calabazo if you want the early start and do not mind the climb over the ridge. Palangana for Neguanje and Playa Cristal. Bahía Concha if you want a beach day instead of a park day, for less than half the price.

Can you buy Tayrona tickets online in advance?

No. Parques Nacionales states that availability depends only on the tickets sold each day at the gate. Anyone selling park entry in advance is not selling you park entry.

How much does it cost to enter Tayrona in 2026?

For a foreign non-resident, $81.000 COP in low season and $96.500 COP in high season. For Colombians and CAN nationals over 25, $36.500 COP and $43.000 COP. Bahía Concha is cheaper all year at $43.500 COP for foreign visitors.

When is Tayrona closed in 2026?

Three periods: 1 to 15 February, 1 to 15 June, and 19 October to 2 November. The February closure of 2026 was extended well past its published end date by Resoluciones 090 and 091, so treat the published windows as a minimum and confirm before you travel.

Is Tayrona open now?

Parques Nacionales announced on 3 July 2026 that Calabazo, Zaino, Palangana and Bahía Concha were all operating. The next scheduled closure begins on 19 October.

Did the collapsed bridge affect getting to Tayrona?

No. The Mendihuaca bridge is at kilometre 37 and the Zaino gate is at kilometre 32, so the park sits on the Santa Marta side of it. Palomino, further east, was cut off for about eight weeks.

Can you do Tayrona and Palomino in the same day?

You can, because they are on the same road and Tayrona comes first. It needs an early start, because the gates stop admitting visitors in the early afternoon and the single-lane bridge past the park adds unpredictable time.
