Medellín Airport Taxi in 2026: The Official Fixed Fare, Where to Get One, and What Else Works

By Shawn Hiner Leamon, CEO of Safe Transfers Colombia. Our drivers make the José María Córdova run every day. Fares checked against the Alcaldía de Medellín’s 2026 tariff announcement and the airport’s published information on 22 October 2026.

Short answer. A taxi between José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) and Medellín is a flat fare, not a metered one. The Alcaldía de Medellín set it at $132.000 COP for a standard taxi from 2 February 2026, with $134.100 for an electric taxi and $143.100 for a luxury taxi, about USD 42 at the October 2026 exchange rate. The official white airport taxis wait at the rank outside arrivals; the ride to El Poblado takes 45 to 60 minutes through the Túnel de Oriente. The alternatives are the Combuses bus at $20.000 per person, ride apps that collect you outside the terminal, and a private transfer from $49 USD per vehicle with a host waiting inside arrivals and the price fixed before you fly.

The official fare, and what it covers

The fare is set each year by the Secretaría de Movilidad de Medellín as part of the city’s taxi tariff (2026 announcement). The 2026 figures, in force since Monday 2 February 2026:

Taxi typeFlat fare, airport and MedellínIn USD (October 2026)
Standard (básico)$132.000 COPabout $42
Electric (eléctrico)$134.100 COPabout $42
Luxury (lujo)$143.100 COPabout $45

What that number does and does not cover:

  • It is a flat fare, so nothing is metered. The city’s tariff lists the airport as a single fixed price; the start fee, the per-82-meter unit and the waiting time that apply inside Medellín do not apply to this ride. The driver should not add the Túnel de Oriente toll of $26.300 on top: a flat fare is the whole price. If someone asks for the toll separately, that is not the official fare.
  • The city publishes it as the fare “al aeropuerto”. Leaving the airport, the authorized white taxis charge the same $132.000 into Medellín, which is what their companies publish and what you will be quoted at the rank. Bello, Envigado, Sabaneta and the other municipalities of the Aburrá Valley are not Medellín, and the fare into them is higher; ask for the figure before the bags go in. Taxi companies also advertise discounted fares of around $120.000 for the trip from a Medellín address to the airport when you book the pickup with them in advance; those are company offers, not the city tariff.
  • No night surcharge is published for the airport fare. The 2026 announcement lists none. Confirm the price before you leave the rank.

Where to get a taxi at José María Córdova

The official taxi rank is outside the arrivals exit on the ground floor, in front of the terminal. The cars are the white airport taxis, operated by local cooperatives; ACOA Taxi Aeropuerto is the best-known and also takes bookings by phone and WhatsApp for the trip back. The airport’s own page notes a separate taxi point at Door 3 of arrivals for taxis to Rionegro, the town next to the airport. There is no booking for the rank and no flight tracking: if your flight lands at a busy hour, you wait in line; if it lands at 2 a.m., there are fewer cars. In our experience the rank moves quickly in the morning and early afternoon; the long lines form in the evening, when the flights from Bogotá, Panama and the United States land close together, and after midnight the question is not the line but whether there are cars left. Payment is in cash with most drivers, by QR with some and by card with a few; carry pesos.

How long the ride takes

José María Córdova sits on the Rionegro plateau, east of Medellín and about 600 meters higher than the city. The Túnel de Oriente (8.2 km, opened in 2019) made the trip to El Poblado 45 to 60 minutes in normal traffic and 50 to 70 to Laureles, Envigado or Sabaneta; weekday evenings into El Poblado can add 20 to 30 minutes. The older Las Palmas road is slower and has the view of the valley at night. Hotels in Llanogrande and Rionegro are 15 to 25 minutes from the terminal.

Combuses: the airport bus

Combuses runs the only public bus between the airport and Medellín. It costs $20.000 per person (since 1 January 2026; the Cívica card is accepted), leaves from the terminal, runs through the Túnel de Oriente and stops at San Diego, Nutibara and Estación Exposiciones in Medellín; it operates around the clock. From the stop you still need a taxi or the metro to your hotel. For one traveler with a backpack in daytime it is the cheapest way down by a wide margin; with suitcases, after dark, or with a hotel in El Poblado or Laureles, the second leg eats the saving.

Rionegro’s urban buses and the intermunicipal companies (Chachafruto, Rápido Medellín Rionegro, Flota Rionegro) also pick up and drop off at or near the airport, which is useful if you are staying in the Oriente, not if you are going to Medellín with bags.

Ride apps at the airport

Uber, DiDi and inDrive operate in Medellín. Their legal position in Colombia is still a gray area, which falls on the driver, not on you, but it shapes the pickup: drivers usually ask you to meet them in a parking lot or outside the terminal rather than at the arrivals door, the fare surges when several flights land together, and the toll comes out of the driver’s fare, which is why the price you see jumps at night. We do not quote a figure because it changes by the hour; expect a price between the bus and the official taxi in quiet hours and above the taxi at peak times. Our Uber in Medellín page has the detail.

Taxi or private transfer: the honest comparison

Toyota Fortuner SUV for private transfers in Colombia

The same flat fare applies when you leave: $132.000 in a standard Medellín taxi, with the toll inside the fare. Ask your hotel to call a taxi, or book one of the airport cooperatives in advance, which is also where the discounted company fares come from. Give yourself the time: Avianca asks passengers to be at the airport three hours before departure, and the ride up the hill is 45 to 60 minutes, more at rush hour and in fog. Before an international departure, do your Check-MIG registration; our Check-MIG guide takes five minutes.
